I think it’s the sort of film I’d enjoy but at over 3 hours long I need someone whose seen it to recommend it!
and I’m not sure it’s DH’s cup of tea!

I saw it tonight. Ads started at 6.30, film finished at 10.40.

It's a difficult one to recommend. Imvho, it wasn't the brilliant masterpiece that some people are reviewing it as. I could have made lots of cuts and brought it in under 2.5 hours. There's some great music and cinematography though. I was never particularly bored, but think there's a lot of excess script.

If I had my time again, I'd watch it on TV.

There was only 5 people in our showing which doesn't bode well for opening weekend, although it's Sunday evening and it's blowing a hooley out there. Bizarrely, they chose to blast heat at the 5 of us tonight and I had to take my jumper off.

I'd also give the Oscar to Ralph Fiennes for Conclave over this.

I only saw Conclave by accident, but quite enjoyed it.

When I saw Memoria a couple of years ago, there were ten people in the cinema at the start and five at the end, one asleep.😴

pizzaHeart · 26/01/2025 23:39

I really wanted to see it at first but then saw the length…. I wouldn’t be able to sit for so long, it’s a nightmare.
It probably will come to Disney+ over summer, I can wait.

TheaBrandt · 26/01/2025 23:40

Very thought provoking we had lots to talk about after it.

functionoverform · 26/01/2025 23:43

Saw it tonight as well. I need to do research as I thought it was about an actual true person who was a Brutalist architect, but all fiction! 🙈

Needs some serious editing and is about 90 mins too long. Brutalism is about clean lines etc and this film was not. It felt a bit wanky in places when it didn't need to be.

How do you see a film by accident? 😂

2025ohdear · 26/01/2025 23:53

You trip and fall into a cinema. Happens a lot apparently.

Shoezembagsforever · 27/01/2025 00:27

The trailer really put me off tbh.

In every scene Adrian Brody just seems massively hammy and overblown. I just don't think I'd enjoy 3 hours of that.

Also, my father escaped Hungary when the Russians invaded and his experience was very different, so it doesn't feel that authentic to me.

We both thought it was brilliant. Definitely worth seeing at the cinema. We went to a posh one and had dinner watching it and a drink in the interval very nice evening.

Wow! Where was that?

TheaBrandt · 27/01/2025 07:05

Lots of bizarre reasons listed not to see it! We were glad we had. Also happened to read in Sat Times it’s been a labour of love for the director / producer budget slashed Covid etc. it’s very good Adrien Brody is amazing. A grown up film.

What about the sexual violence? That’s what specifically makes me think twice. I found the brilliant Women Talking almost unbearable, even though it was so subtly handled.

WorriedMutha · 27/01/2025 09:34

TheaBrandt · 26/01/2025 23:38

There’s no “prolonged sexual violence” what are you on about?

I read the details on imdb. I'm always wary of films with prolonged violent scenes. I quite fancied the Substance but when I read the violence particulars on imdb I thought I would struggle not to be sick. Perhaps in this instance the violence sounds worse in writing than appears on film. I'm following this thread as I'm still weighing it up.

AzurePanda · 27/01/2025 10:29

I enjoyed it and very glad to have seen it in a cinema. IMO the first half is a lot better than the second. Adrien Brody is incredible. There are in my view some strange plot developments and not sure how well the overall story hangs together. The cinematography is brilliant.

The AI thing solely relates to tweaking Felecity Jones and Adrien Brody when they are speaking Hungarian. Apparently it’s one of the most difficult languages in the world to learn and the director was determined to get it absolutely right.

SocksAndTheCity · 27/01/2025 12:32

The only violence in The Substance is a single fight scene around three quarters of the way through and some pushing and shoving in the finale, @WorriedMutha ?

There's plenty of gore/body horror, but it isn't a violent film.

TheaBrandt · 27/01/2025 14:26

Christ I lasted 20 minutes watching The Substance i actually thought i was going to faint! I had to leave the room!

There is a male on male rape in The Brutalist it is awful but quite quick and is integral to the plot it’s not gratuitous. Appreciate this is all very subjective I am quite squeamish!

Piggywaspushed · 27/01/2025 16:54

The film must be an 18 for a reason? 18s are actually very rare.

I assumed it was for the sexual violence.

SocksAndTheCity · 27/01/2025 17:18

I assumed it was the drugs, @Piggywaspushed . This thread is the first I've heard about there being any amount of sex in it?

BeaTwix · 27/01/2025 17:21

I saw it on Friday. Packed sold out cinema with uncomfortable seats (but is in a Brutalist building!)

I liked it but had expected to really love it.

However, the length felt self indulgent and detracted from the beautiful cinematography. And despite the length there were some areas that I felt were under explored and areas where something was started that could have just been omitted all together.

SereneCapybara · 27/01/2025 17:27

Glad I read this thread. DH was talking about wanting to see The Brutalist and I agreed without realising it was 3 hours long and violent. Think I will wait to see it at home.

Off to see A Complete Unknown instead.

I read it in The Times review. Drugs would only be an 18 under certain circumstances, such as apparent instructions on usage. I assumed there was graphic set and serial violence.

I'm generally not a fan of 18s unless they are exceptional or really mild 18s.

NetZeroZealot · 27/01/2025 18:35

Those of you who have seen it, would you say it is a dark and depressing film?

Trying to see whether to ask DH to come with me (he doesn't like those type of films)

Usually whatever gets 90%+ on Rotten Tomatoes gets 81% from audiences, and IME the audience is usually right.

PeggyMitchellsCameo · 27/01/2025 18:46

Sunday Times Culture yesterday said it’s genius and virtuous but also… dull.
I will watch when I can see it at home due to its length.
I definitely want to see it.

TheaBrandt · 28/01/2025 00:03

It’s not dull at all. I almost cried with boredom in tinker tailor soldier spy but found this kept me with it. It’s like an epic you don’t know what will happen next and there are real switches in fortune and character. I was apprehensive as an 18 but it’s fine there is some drug use and a brief man on man rape.

OneDenimRobin · 28/01/2025 01:37

Shock I love that film
