Has anyone been to see it. Is it good?

It’s ok. I wouldn’t call it a must-watch but it was better than I expected.

kaymay12 · 26/11/2024 00:13

It's OK. Not a patch on the original though.

maybeinanotherlifetime · 07/12/2024 16:36

The emperors in the second one were like panto villains and not a patch on Joaquin Phoenix’s bad guy in the first film. Agree with the previous poster that it was not as great as the first film.

sequin2000 · 08/12/2024 15:23

I absolutely loved it, almost as much as the first one which I also loved. The criticisms I have seen are way too harsh. I wasn't a fan of Denzel playing a baddie for once with a clear American accent though.

DreadPirateRobots · 08/12/2024 15:24

I thought it was bad enough that I walked out, tbh. All very cartoonish and paper thin. Crappy CGI. Predictable. Paul Mescal did very little emoting.

another1bitestheduck · 08/12/2024 20:35

probably one of the worst films I've ever seen. I have a fairly low expectation threshold (and soft spot) for dumb big budget action flicks but this didn't even meet them. The plot made no sense, it was incredibly anachronistic in almost every way, Connie Nielsen has had so much botox her face stayed in exactly the same expression whether she was happy/sad/scared, and it somehow managed to be both completely ridiculous and over-the-top (sharks in the Colosseum) but also boring?

(I had a free ticket and I was still tempted to walk out!)

gaggiagirl · 08/12/2024 20:41

Me and DH are going to see it. Should we save our money and watch it when it comes out on Netflix instead? We loved the first one.

Aaron95 · 08/12/2024 20:46

It's so bad it is hilarious. I was trying desperately to not laugh out loud at several points. It doesn't so much jump the shark as fill the coliseum with seawater and leap over a whole bunch of them.

I would save your money but also not even bother watching it on netflix.
I also loved the first one. Read the reviews for this and thought surely it can't be that bad, and even if it was, it would be worth it to see the colosseum etc on a big screen. It was that bad and the bigger screen just made the CGI look worse.

Hoppinggreen · 09/12/2024 20:41

To be fair I think the Romans DID flood the Coliseum, there is evidence of piping but there were no sharks, probably more likely that they re enacted sea battles

gaggiagirl · 09/12/2024 20:42

It sounds horrendous. I'm almost curious to see how bad it is 🤣

Livinginaclock · 11/12/2024 14:46

Yeah, I did that, not sure the person next to me appreciated my laughing.

ReformMyArse · 28/12/2024 08:43

The CGI was terrible. The whole thing was derivative and crap.

AnyFucker · 28/12/2024 08:50

The original Gladiator is in my top 5 films ever

Saw this one and it is ok. Just.

RH1234 · 28/12/2024 08:52

We watched it because we love gladiator. Gladiator 2 was awful. There are some links back to the original, but as someone said above it’s pretty much a panto. Disappointed is an understatement.

Janedoe82 · 28/12/2024 08:55

Well we enjoyed it! Take it for what it is- entertainment.

Sandylittletoes · 28/12/2024 08:59

We enjoyed it - very entertaining and spectacular. It isn’t emotional like the first and there were a few bits that were so over the top that we laughed - but that was part of the fun. It is a very different film. They did flood the colosseum irl btw.

sadmillenial · 29/12/2024 09:39

this was so bad it almost made me stop fancying Paul Mescal......

Me too. Apart from a bit of clichéd theatrical breastbeating he hadn't emoted at all by the point I walked out.

He looked like he was about to burst into laughter at all times.
Thought he was an odd choice for the role

They definitely did do re-enactments of naval battles but it's never actually been proven they took place at the colosseum.if you've ever been there you'd know how hard it would be to flood/make water tight. Yes they had aquaducts but not pressure hoses - think about how long it takes today to fill up an average sized swimming pool and times that by how long it would take to fill an arena that size (and how long that would have one of the biggest entertainment arenas out of action for). Plus how hard it would be to keep it watertight and not drown the several layers beneath the amphitheatre. Even if they did it would never have been deep enough to have several full size ships - they would have been much smaller scale re-enactments. And definitely no sharks!
