Kate Winslet was terrific in this and thought that thought Andy Samberg was great in it too and it was nice to see him step away from comedy films.

Kate Winslet seems to do a lot of rubbish.films as well as good ones...this could have been decent. Apparently she didn't want it focused on her love life, but that would have made it good so reviews say.
So irritating when you know a film s coming out in a year and then it's no good!

snowynight · 22/09/2024 18:22

Worthy but dull!

rookiemere · 23/09/2024 20:30

I didn't enjoy it.

I thought Winslet was miscast, this will come out wrong but she didn't look like she had previously been a model and portrayed the character with so little charm I was amazed that anyone stuck with her.

She was completely charmless.

NeedWineNow · 24/09/2024 15:56

By contrast me and DH saw it yesterday and thought it was great. Well cast, and we really enjoyed it.

Shimmyshimmycocobop · 25/09/2024 10:34

I also didn't like it, thought the script was clunky, particularly all the "aren't the Nazi's awful" stuff at the begining. Agree that Lee's character was so unlikable it was a mystery why her friends and husband seemed to love her.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 25/09/2024 12:00

Alexander Skarsgård got criticism for his English accent. It was nowhere near as bad as Winslet's American accent.

CrossPurposes · 25/09/2024 15:22

I thought Winslet was terrific too and I think she is very charismatic (and she still looks fab naked). The film was clunky in parts but this sort of biopic always is. However, Lee Miller's life was so full that this could have been a TV series.

Completely agree. I wanted to like it - I love Kate Winslet and Lee Miller - but it was disappointing.
I thought Kate and Alexander Skarsgard were miscast.
I did however fall madly in love with the guy who plays her son. I thought he was brilliant (and beautiful).

WhereAreWeNow · 25/09/2024 15:36

I also came away from that film feeling inadequate about my breasts 😂 I'm a similar age to Kate W and I have serious breast envy.

rookiemere · 25/09/2024 16:47

I thought she was in great nick for a woman of her age that has had DCs, but stretching credulity as an ex model who was presumably meant to be much younger. I'm aware I am criticising her body and I don't mean or want to do that - I love that some leading ladies have wrinkles and bumps - but to me her acting didn't manage to transcend the physical, to make Lee seem alluring and charismatic.

I loved her in Mare of Eastown, here I don't know how to describe it but she seemed to give a lumpy and petulant performance. I compare it to Kirsten Dunst in Civil War - similar roles, similar personalities even similar physiques, Dunst displayed a range of emotions that warmed me to the character that I simply didn't see in Winslet in Lee.

But many critics have said she was great so what do I know.

WhereAreWeNow · 25/09/2024 17:07

Completely agree @rookiemere
KW is a stunningly beautiful woman but she doesn't look credible as a woman in her 30s.

EmmaStone · 25/09/2024 23:15

Just home from watching it, I thought it was great. Really engaging. The only thing I didn't like was the journalist/son twist.

lifesabitchandthenyoudie · 05/10/2024 09:00

We just saw it (always late up in SW Scotland!) and found it one of the most powerful and captivating films we have seen. We thought Kate was excellent. Watched the documentary on youtube about the research Kate did for it, in particular with the son. He says he'd always thought she should act his mum. I thought it developed very well and she made her character very real. There were tears at the end, and I heard many others obviously affected by it in the cinema.

CrossPurposes · 06/10/2024 21:30

A BBC documentary from 2020 about Lee Miller is being repeated on BBC Four on Tuesday.

FutureFeelsBleak · 05/11/2024 16:54

Am just back from watching it, and thought it was great. Previously was only vaguely aware of Lee Miller the person (links to Man Ray etc), rather than the photographer and have now ordered some books on the back of the film.

Bideshi · 05/11/2024 16:59

Did you see it at the Robert Burns@lifesabitchandthenyoudie ?

I've been a Lee Miller fan for quite a few decades and I thought it was great. I thought Kate Winslet was brilliant and totally convincing. Direction was a bit clunky but that's always the case with biopics. I saw it a couple of weeks ago and I'm still thinking about it.

NoCarbsForMe · 06/11/2024 03:14

I've had it highly recommended. Surprised by this thread.

FutureFeelsBleak · 06/11/2024 17:14

I only managed to get part way through the iPlayer programme. The stuff about her father photographing her naked was shocking. And then the people talking about her life and attitude (including her son who started by dismissing her as an alcoholic before he discovered her photos) with such certainly was beyond annoying.

If anyone does want to watch it, it finishes on Fri.

LushLemonTart · 01/12/2024 16:43

Just watching this now. In tears it's so well done. No wonder she was an alcoholic the things she saw.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 01/12/2024 16:55

I knew quite a lot about Lee Miller before this film. There was nothing new in this Kate Winslet show. It was very disappointing.

The beautiful son was Josh O'Connor who played Prince Charles in the Crown seasons 3 & 4. I enjoyed the film but agree that Kate Winslet was wrong in the role. It felt like a missed opportunity to tell her incredible story.
