I remembered this film today and how much I loved it when I was younger (it came out when I was mid teens) and I want to watch it with my children but it says it’s a 13+… they’re nearly 8 and nearly 10. I can’t think what’s that awful in it but I haven’t seen it in a while, what do you think? Are they still too young? The ghosts aren’t scary, Casper is cute and the others are just grumpy…

Currently watching Penguins of Madagascar on TV and my youngest just said it’s scary… so maybe I should reassess!

I remember watching this when I was 5. I think it should be fine for them and would put it on for my dd under 3 but you could always watch it beforehand and see what you think for your children.

It's apparently a 12A now but originally a PG.
It could be something like a character smoking a cigarette or something that's required it to be up - rated.

Needmorelego · 07/09/2024 18:02

The 12A version is apparently 1 minute shorter too.
Something was cut !

Just adding this is a spoiler if you haven’t seen the film before so don’t read on… just remembered the dad dies at the end and they bring him back to life, if I remember correctly. Hmmm I’m not sure.

@ShillyShallySherbet The dad dying and other adult behaviours, smoking and drinking . The adult humour would mostly still go over children's heads but perhaps not as much now as it would have in 1995.

Snowdrops17 · 07/09/2024 18:08

I can't really remember but were some of the ghost jokes inappropriate? Still they would go over a child's head

Try this op

There is a whole lot of death actually, probably wouldn't let your children watch it on their own on the emotional basis rather than anything scary.

This is so useful thank you, and thanks everyone, I think I’ll leave this one until they’re a bit older. Do love this film though. Remember watching the final scene over and over with that beautiful song and I really had quite a crush on human Casper!

Devon Sawa as Casper was much cuter than Devon Sawa in Final Destination 🤣

ShillyShallySherbet · 07/09/2024 18:50

I didn’t realise he was in that, now that’s definitely not one I shall be watching with my children!!

I’d welcome any recommendations for good films to watch with a nearly 8 and nearly 10 year old this evening as I’m at a loss and they want to watch something with me!

We’ve settled on Adventures in Babysitting (the new version) on Disney plus

purpleme12 · 07/09/2024 19:09

It's fine to watch at that age!

FoxtrotOscarKindaDay · 07/09/2024 23:20

The Labyrinth, ET and The Never Ending Story are ingrained childhood movies for me ... I only watched The Never Ending Story once in full. Fast forward was used to skip the swamp forever after.

purpleme12 · 07/09/2024 23:24

This is what it says about it on BBFC

Hardly worse than some other PG films is it

Does anyone else remember Casper meets Wendy?!
It was one of my faves when young I think I had it on video but nobody else remembers this!
