La bete (The Beast)

Rave reviews, but two thumbs down for me. Another of those films that seems ridiculously pleased with itself. Plenty of call-outs to other, better, films (The Lobster, Blue Velvet, Inland Empire/Mulholland Drive). Thought the two leads were very good, and to my English ears, George's French accent sounded pretty good. If I'd been watching on. TV, I'd have turned it off after half an hour. Lea Seydoux has a great screen presence, but she can't redeem this humourless pudding for me.

I couldn't agree more - I liked the look of this from the trailer, but two and a half hours of derivative, disjointed, pretentious twaddle later I was annoyed with myself for not walking out thirty minutes in.

The performances are what kept me in my seat, I think; I'm baffled by the enthusiasm for it in the reviews I've read, although I did like parts of it. I wish I'd gone to Furiosa instead.
