Perfect films

What films wouldn’t you change a moment of?

Ive just watched Billy Elliot and I think it’s absolutely perfect. The characters, the set, the very palpable despair displayed by the miners during strikes - anyone familiar with these areas know that these places have barely progressed as a direct result of Thatcher’s destruction. I feel that somehow came across in the movie.

The ending 🥺 it’s actual perfection

Much Ado About Nothing (the Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson version)

Oh that was so sweet!

alrightluv · 16/07/2024 08:55

@beguilingeyes I didn't know that about Queen.

Mothership4two · 16/07/2024 09:31

Bohemian Rhapsody is full of errors which caused some controversy when it came out. There are so many it's quite strange especially as band members were involved in the making of the film. Some are obviously for dramatic effect, but some are just inaccuracies.

I thought the oddest one was making a big thing of their break up with EMI, which in reality didn't happen then and in fact Queen stayed with EMI for a long time and years and years after Freddie Mercury's death.

The way they treated FM's character was awful. They soft-soaped him and turned him into a victim.

I love that film, and much prefer it to The Philadelphia Story.

You could add in a lot of screwball comedies, though. His Girl Friday is pretty perfect.

And Roger Taylor was portrayed as some sort.of cockney oik who didn't know whe Galileo was, when he's a posh public school boy (it's Roger Meddows-Taylor) who has two degrees.

Batman /Cat woman (with Michelle Pheifer )

All of us strangers. I'm still thinking about it months after seeing it.

Oh gosh yes. I need to watch it again maybe to 'get' it a bit more but I found the final scene with his mother very emotional. I adore Andrew Scott, his face is full of expression and he has the loveliest smile

ConstantlyFuriosa · 30/07/2024 04:41

Alien
JAWS
The Talented Mr Ripley
Thelma & Louise
Withnail and I
Goodfellas
The Shining
Godfathers 1 and 2
North by Northwest
There Will be Blood
Phantom Thread

caveat being that there’s always a slight scene that might jar in a teensy tiny way but I love these films so much I forgive it immediately.

And a special shoutout for Joker, which is immaculate and underrated. It’s a masterpiece in my mind.

ConstantlyFuriosa · 30/07/2024 04:45

Btw, @StoatofDisarray while I may not agree that A Dark Song is perfect, I did love it. Especially the transcendent scene towards the end. Won’t say more than that as it would spoil it, but you’ll know the one I mean. It was so stunning.

Thunderpants88 · 30/07/2024 04:49

City of God AMAZING

Oh yes, I agree with The Others & The Talented Mr Ripley

I really love Ripley but it’s nothing like the book, which I’ve just read. The recent TV adaptation was much more accurate ( but sooooo sloooooow ).

ConstantlyFuriosa · 30/07/2024 04:56

I hated the tv adaptation of Ripley to start off with but now think it’s perfection - as long as I separate it in my mind from the film. I’ve rewatched it about 4 times. It’s aesthetic perfection, and the Caravaggio focus is genius.

Needhelp101 · 30/07/2024 13:04

Oh God, so many already mentioned. Pride was the first that sprang to mind.

Back to the Future is the most structurally perfect film of the 20th century, an absolute masterclass in scriptwriting.

I could, and do, watch Terminator 2 and Aliens over and over again.

I love The Talented Mr Ripley (film) but it's not super accurate an adaptation.
And yes to When Harry Met Sally and Shawshank!
