A John Wayne film?

My elderly dad loves John Wayne, and we're trying to find a particular one, but (a) neither of us remember it clearly enough to find the name, and (b) we could be wrong and it's not actually a John Wayne film.

So your help would be appreciated 😄

What we remember is a grumpy cowboy (the one we think was John Wayne) ends up reluctantly looking after a group of kids while driving something (Animals? Wagons?) from somewhere to somewhere else. We think he may die before the end of the film, and the kids manage to fend for themselves because of the skills he taught them. But that bit may be from a different film.

Any ideas?

I'll take your word for it and get the film for dad. We both thought it was an earlier film in black and white, and don't remember the boys avenging him like that.

O I love a good John Wayne movie, my DF was a big fan too. His favourite western was Shane though, always makes me shed a tear watching it.
