I watched this tonight after not seeing it for about 15 years. Robin Williams' performance seems even more poignant now. It's a lovely film.
It's amazing to think that Ben Affleck and Matt Damon wrote the script when they were in their early 20s. It was also interesting to see Casey Affleck in a small role. I don't think I paid any attention to him when I saw it first time around but he's very funny in it.
I'd recommend a rewatch to anybody who hasn't seen it recently.

Probably one of my favourite films, have watched it many times so definitely agree 👍

Great writing and dialogue especially by Robin Williams and reminds you what a versatile actor he was.

billysboy · 30/03/2024 09:12

A fab film I was recommended to watch after explaining my autism to someone

EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness · 30/03/2024 09:20

It's a great movie. Its one I come back to regularly.

BrandyandGinger · 30/03/2024 19:45

I don't think anybody ever gave a better portrayal of grief than Robin Williams did in it.

Watched it a couple of weeks ago for probably the fifth time. Absolutely brilliant. The bar scene is my favourite part

maras2 · 30/03/2024 20:09

I loved it.
Thanks for the memory jog.
Off to find it now.

Pigeonqueen · 30/03/2024 20:10

Love this film. ❤️

Loopsielou · 30/03/2024 20:30

They certainly wrote a great film. They also wrote Dogma I believe which is one of my favourite films ever

FizzyDucks · 31/03/2024 07:00

It is one of my favourite films. The acting, the script, it is great. Robin Williams deserved his Oscar.

Luckydog7 · 31/03/2024 07:08

Robin Williams best role in my opinion. Apparently lots of his parts were unscripted (and Matt's reactions) e.g. the part about his wife farting.

I've always thought it was a shame that Matt and Ben went into acting primarily rather then stayed as director/producers/writers as while they are good actors, where they really shine is is behind the scenes. Perhaps as they age and lose their leading man looks they will return to it or do more unusual roles. Perhaps I don't know that much though. I know Ben in particular has continued with creation side.

billysboy · 31/03/2024 07:34

Stumbled across the Rainmaker last night also very good

Cantfindutrogestan · 31/03/2024 08:03

One of my favourite films, also love the sound track

Yirk · 31/03/2024 08:13

Beautiful film, although I could watch Robin Williams in any film, he was brilliant.

Benjaminsniddlegrass · 31/03/2024 08:16

@Loopsielou Kevin Smith wrote and directed Dogma they were just in it. I think the only other film they've written together was The Last Duel which came out a few years ago with Jodie Comer and Adam Driver (as well as them) in it.

Benjaminsniddlegrass · 31/03/2024 08:17

But yes I love GWH - I had such a huge crush on Matt Damon circa 1997 - how do you like them apples...

fashionqueen1183 · 31/03/2024 08:35

I remember them jumping up and down when they won the Oscar, I think for the screen play/writing. They were so young too.
Amazing film.

JasminSnyder · 04/04/2024 10:33

This is one of my top-10 films. That moment in the bar is my favourite.

Tulipvase · 04/04/2024 10:40

I love Casey Affleck, The finest hours is a great film. Also love GWH - I’m interested if I’ve missed something though - is Matt Damon’s character meant to be autistic?

DoYouSmokePaul · 04/04/2024 10:44

Such a famous film and I’ve never seen it! I think when it came out I was too young and thought it looked boring and then I never got round to it.

Good to hear it seems to have stood the test of time! I might give it a go this weekend as I’m going to a family wedding and will need something to get through the hangover. Though I’ll probably need a stack of tissues by the sounds of it 😢

BrandyandGinger · 05/04/2024 14:33

My next mission is to rewatch two other Robin Williams films from that era that I loved at the time, The Fisher King and Good Morning Vietnam.
I loved Dogma when I saw it years ago so that can go on the rewatch list too.

DS watched this the other night

He does Maths A Level and I asked him if he could do the maths problems that are in the film and he laughed and said yes of course they're really easy

InAMillion · 20/04/2024 17:22

Matt Damon's character isn't autistic
