Just come downstairs to find DH watching this and realised what a lovely film it is. I usually hate period shit but for some reason I love this.

I love the battle scenes, the music and the Galapagos scenes too and both Paul Bettany and Russel in it.

When the poor young chap has his arm amputated though

I love it. I've read the entire series it's based on. Must do it again some time.

Love this film. Paul Bettany is far too tall to play Maturin and yet he’s perfect. Russell is perfect as Aubrey. I really wish they’d made a sequel.

I wonder if they’ll ever do a tv show based on the books.

It’s brilliant, even if Patrick O’Brian fans complain about the casting and mashing together elements from different films. Someone I know tutored on the set — lots of kids.

My absolute favourite film. Such a wonderful representation of friendship.

The books are fab too!

I've never read the books but may look at getting them on my kindle for holiday.

Enjoyed the Lesser of two Weevils scene again

It's nearly 20 years since I read them (in one long, extremely enjoyable hit). As far as I can remember now, like many long series it got better as it went along and he hit his stride and the characters became intensely familiar.

DH watching it again and I've just wandered in to the room to see RC in his cream sailor trouser thingies and frilly white shirt, open a few buttons down.
