I’m not really a film buff but my interest is usually peaked around the Oscar’s as I’m interested in what makes a good film.

The only one I’ve seen so far is ‘Poor Things’ but I’d like to see a few more before the awards ceremony.

Recently seen the Holdovers and American fiction - both are excellent and very funny.

Killers of the Flower Moon is excellent imo.

Great acting by all 3 main actors (and everyone else).

I think I’ll go and see The Holdovers this week, @Cheguevarahamster. Thanks for the recommendation.

Thank you @GonnaNeedABiggerGoat, unfortunately I don't think it is showing at any of my local cinemas any more.

The Holdovers is excellent. Paul Giamatti is a genius. Past Lives also very good. I found Barbie unexciting.

Lots of votes for The Holdovers, I’m looking forward to it.

I’ll look up Past Lives and American Fiction too.

Saw American Fiction yesterday. Excellent acting about racial bias in the publishing industry but also about personal and family struggle.

We've only seen killers of the flowers moon and we thought it was brilliant so definitely worth seeing at the cinema. Can't speak for the rest.

Maestro - I hated (sorry any fans)
Oppenheimer - I liked by not enough to justify the large number of nominations. e.g. Emily Blunt is a magnificent actress but in this film, her part was relatively small and, to be honest, seemed like 'bread and butter' acting for her
May December - is (just) OK
Society of the Snow - amazing and very moving

I don't think I've seen any of the others. Really looking forward to The Holdovers, though.

Don't forget that Judi Dench won an Oscar for her appearance as Queen Elizabeth I when she was only on screen for 8 mins, so if Emily Blunt's role was small and she wasn't on screen for a long time, there is a precedent set for that.

I loved The Holdovers. I really had no expectations going in to see it and loved it.

Yes, he really is! It's such a treat to watch him. I saw the film yesterday and absolutely loved it. He's perfect in it

This is true! Though the theory is that she won for Shakespeare in Love because she'd missed out the year before for Mrs Brown - and so got additional votes for that.

But there is precedent.. Hopkins got it for The Silence of the Lambs, despite only being on screen for about 15mins. But what a 15 mins!

But for me, personally, I just didn't think Emily Blunt's performance was outstanding. Though she is an exceptionally talented actor.

The Holdovers is fantastic.

Anatomy of a Fall is gripping.

But for us (we went as a group) The Zone of Interest trumps everything - it's a work of art and a masterpiece, and asks if we're all actually closer to the perpetrators than the victims of the Holocaust.

DH and I saw 'The Holdovers' this week and loved it- everything about it.

Also loved The Holdovers and Anatomy of a Fall, am seeing American Fiction tomorrow (and Argylle on Wednesday 😀)

Past Lives is on Netflix from the fifteenth - it was one of my favourites last year and I'm looking forward to seeing it again. I have Maestro on my watchlist, but I can't honestly think when I'm going to want to watch it atm.

Going to see this on Friday and really looking forward to it, but braced for a tough watch

Oh God, so pleased I'm not the only one. DH put Maestro on last night. Awful, dreary film. I gave up and went to bed early!

I’ve loved reading all the posts, thanks for all your contributions.

I’m not going to bother with Maestro and I don’t think I want to watch The Zone of Interest.

Really like the sound of Killers of the Flower Moon but not sure how to watch.

I hope some of the films will come to Netflix soon, I saw a PP mention Past Lives so hopefully some others will be released soon too.

I've just got back from American Fiction and I thought it was great - definitely recommended.

The trailer for Zone of Interest played beforehand and it looks incredible; I wasn't planning to see it and I'm not sure I'll enjoy it (IYKWIM), but I think I'll go now.

Following with interest. Sadly don't make it to the cinema very often (used to, before young children!) but will watch what I can at home. If any of the films would be significantly better on the big screen, please do share your recommendations. TIA!

I agree with you, I found Maestro quite dull, a sort of Sunday afternoon film on TV, not an Oscar nominee!

I loved Society of the Snow and also the brilliant Anatomy of a Fall.

BAFTAs - I would so love Rye Lane to win! A British made film shot in South London

I think ‘Poor Things’ is visually beautifully and would be good to see on a big screen @AnotherEmma.

I usually visit the cinema once in a blue moon but I went twice last week and I’m planning to go again as soon as my cold clears up.
