I’m not really a film buff but my interest is usually peaked around the Oscar’s as I’m interested in what makes a good film.

The only one I’ve seen so far is ‘Poor Things’ but I’d like to see a few more before the awards ceremony.

I had a check and can watch maerstiro and past lives on Netflix
Killing moon is on Apple
Can rent anatomy of a fall
3 still at cinema

I think I’ll watch ‘Past Lives’ over the weekend. Anyone else want to join me (together apart)?

I think ‘Poor Things’ is visually beautifully and would be good to see on a big screen @AnotherEmma.

I usually visit the cinema once in a blue moon but I went twice last week and I’m planning to go again as soon as my cold clears up.

Thank you! Will try and get a babysitter!

Society of the snow - it’s on Netflix. Incredible film. Really incredible. I immediately went and read all the books I could find from the survivors. Just such an inspiring and amazing story and the film making is beautiful- a lot of it was actually filmed where the original tragedy happened.

Saw 'The Zone of Interest' today. My gosh. It's an experience. A new take on the horror of the Holocaust. Really sickening and chilling, as it should be. The much-praised soundtrack is indeed incredible, and the whole film only felt 40 minutes long. Pure cold horror. Would love to see it again

ChristmasTreeMagic · 16/02/2024 15:23

I saw The Zone of Interest this week & thought it was absolutely outstanding. Its utterly memorable.

On an entirely different note we also saw Poor Things & loved that too

Is All of us strangers nominated? It should be - another outstanding film

hanahsaunt · 16/02/2024 15:40

Past Lives is just gorgeous - absolutely loved it. Also really enjoyed Anatomy of a Fall - brilliant take on a court room drama. Really want to see both The Holdovers and American Fiction.

Topbird29 · 16/02/2024 15:47

Have only seen Opprnheimer so can't compare it to the others. I thought it was a good film,.and Robert Downey Jr was excellent - my DH didn't know it was him until the credits (obv forgot he was even in it). Cillian Murphy was really good, and Matt Damon had some witty lines. Emily Blunt and Florence Pugh weren't really in it much, and I wasn't sympathetic to many of the people at all!

burnoutbabe · 17/02/2024 14:25

Watching anatomy of a fall today -Amazon prime £3.49

Then will do flowers of killing moon tomorrow (apple) to cover 3 of 5 bafta nominees (on Sunday evening)

I’ve loved reading all the posts, thanks for all your contributions.

I’m not going to bother with Maestro and I don’t think I want to watch The Zone of Interest.

Really like the sound of Killers of the Flower Moon but not sure how to watch.

I hope some of the films will come to Netflix soon, I saw a PP mention Past Lives so hopefully some others will be released soon too.

Zone of Interest is really really worth watching. It is a work of art. It’s also not unwatchable in terms of pain, if that makes sense. You’re removed from the horror, which is the whole point, really, but it does help you cope when you’re watching it. It’s weirdly gripping.
Maestro, not so much. A bit of a mess but wonderful performances.

burnoutbabe · 18/02/2024 19:06

Killers of the flower moon is very very long at 3 1:2 hours!

Why. Can't Oscar movies be 95 mins like a good Netflix film!

Thanks @Bilingualspingual, I’ll add Zone of Interest to my list of films to watch watch is when they stream. I really want to watch Poor Things and All of us Strangers again.

And I’m taking myself to the flicks to see The Holdovers on Thursday.

I saw American Fiction last night and really enjoyed it, it was funnier than I expected. I was a bit underwhelmed by Past Lives.

PermanentTemporary · 19/02/2024 07:29

Thanks for this thread. I thought Maestro desperately needed a fairly brutal producer ordering them to tell an actual story and stop doing glamorous shots of each other. Loved Oppenheimer. The Holdover sounds fun though I've made the mistake of watching the trailer which seems to contain most of it.

I read the novel to try and avoid watching The Zone of Interest but it sounds so different i will aim to see that too.

sakura06 · 19/02/2024 18:00

The Holdovers, American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall and Oppenheimer and The Zone of Interest are all fantastic. First two are quite fun (albeit bittersweet). The latter is excellent. 5/5.

I was a little disappointed by Past Lives. Borderline hated Poor Things 🫣 Heard bad things about Maestro. Killers of the Flower Moon is too long for me!

PiningForTheMoon · 22/02/2024 15:07

I’ve just got home from watching The Holdovers. Wow, I absolutely loved it.

And I’m thrilled that Da’Vine Joy Randolph won a BAFTA.

Perfect Days is out tomorrow, for anybody who wants to get another one in before Oscar night.

The trailer looks lovely and I'm going to see it at a matinee at my local cinema on Monday afternoon (I suspect I'll bawl all the way through it whether it's sad or not 😊).

Killers of the Flower Moon
The Holdovers

hanahsaunt · 24/02/2024 15:19

I saw The Zone of Interest yesterday. I think that it will stay with/haunt me for a long time. On one level it's rather banal but oh my goodness - it's that which is so unsettling. The utter horror of a quintessentially normal life which I wonder is a bit like the boiled frog phenomenon? Then again, maybe I'm being too nice. I think someone upthread described it as a work of art and it absolutely is.

LaurieFairyCake · 24/02/2024 16:16

Anatomy of a Fall is one of the best films I've ever seen

I'm so glad I saw it in the cinema - the acting by the young boy literally moved me to tears at the end. And it was good to see such excellent parenting on screen by the Mum - usually you see really shit parenting on screen.

She doesn't try in any way to persuade him of anything, just trusts in him to make his own decisions

colouringindoors · 24/02/2024 23:51

Highly recommend Oppenheimer and Society of the Snow

Venus14 · 26/02/2024 00:10

Just watched Society of the Snow. Very moving and a testament to the human desire to survive.
