I’m not really a film buff but my interest is usually peaked around the Oscar’s as I’m interested in what makes a good film.

The only one I’ve seen so far is ‘Poor Things’ but I’d like to see a few more before the awards ceremony.

See my 6th one.

American fiction which I really enjoyed as a funny tale of a writer with sone anti woke points and also an engaging family tale.

I don't think it's Oscar winning but I enjoyed it a lot.

4 more to go before next Sunday!

hanahsaunt · 04/03/2024 10:55

I saw The Holdovers last night and loved it. Definitely worth seeing but not my favourite of the list which, I think, is still Past Lives.

burnoutbabe · 04/03/2024 11:30

Poor things is on Disney from 7th!

Gahhh as I paid for it!

burnoutbabe · 04/03/2024 11:31

Oh I saw maestro over weekend which held my interest the least of any so far.

On my way to see the holdovers, number 8 for me.

WomanInTheBoat · 04/03/2024 23:19

Just seen American Fiction - loved it! Even more than The Holdovers which i thought was pretty good.

burnoutbabe · 06/03/2024 14:37

seen No 8 - Holdovers - really enjoyed it as a pleasant sort of movie with "mild peril/stakes" going on.

And today no 9 - Zone of Interest which was intense.

Just Past lives now to see.

Fave so far - American Fiction but i can't see that winning over Oppenheimer (which i'd rank 5 after AF/Anatomy/Holdovers and Barbie in terms of ones i enjoyed watching).

SocksAndTheCity · 06/03/2024 15:39

Your top 5 for enjoyability is pretty much identical to mine @burnoutbabe , although I've avoided Oppenheimer so I'll substitute Past Lives.

I know it's a best film award and I can watch X, Y or Z noticing how well directed or edited it is and how great the performances are, but when it comes to how much I enjoyed myself it would be American Fiction all the way (it would have been Barbie six months ago).

I agree it's not going to happen though, but I hope it (and Holdovers) get something at least 😊

hanahsaunt · 06/03/2024 18:34

I saw American Fiction last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. It ranks above Oppenheimer along with The Holdovers, The Zone of Interest, Anatomy of a Fall and my top one - Past Lives. Barbie probably sits beside Oppenheimer.

Willmafrockfit · 06/03/2024 18:39

happy that Poor Things is coming to Disney
i want to see zone of Interest
wouldnt see Maestro again, or Past Lives

GreenSalon · 06/03/2024 18:49

IMO ONLY
In order from the ones I’ve seen:
The Holdovers
Anatomy of a Fall (for the outstanding lead performance)
American Fiction (very funny and lead performance is good)
Flowers of the Killer Moon (didn’t love - Lily Gladstone was great, not a Leo de C fan but he was very good, Robert de N playing his usual)
Past Lives (good but not as much as I wanted it to be)
Oppenheimer (for Cillian M even though he’s been better in other things he’s a brilliant actor. Emily B underused and a poor fig leaf of a part to balance all the men on screen).
Maestro (only for Carey Mulligan who I think is one of the best actors of her generation).

Haven’t seen Poor Things but liked his other films and think Emma Stone is very watchable but she’s not as good as some of the others mentioned above.

colouringindoors · 06/03/2024 20:11

Where can I watch American fiction and Holdovers?

burnoutbabe · 06/03/2024 20:13

Cinema

I have been 4 times since last Monday. Lucky I am in London so plenty of options.

fedupwithbeingcold · 06/03/2024 22:19

I really enjoyed Poor things and I'm going to the cinema to see Perfect Days tomorrow. I've been to the cinema four times since last Friday which is very unusual for me

SocksAndTheCity · 06/03/2024 23:51

I fell asleep during Perfect Days but I was very tired and it's incredibly calming to watch, so that is in no way a mark down. I'll definitely watch it again.

SocksAndTheCity · 06/03/2024 23:53

My last to watch is Killers of the Flower Moon on Sunday evening; I should get back just as the Oscars are starting. Hopefully I can stay awake all the way through this one 😂

Inthetropics · 06/03/2024 23:57

Anatomy of a Fall is really good.

burnoutbabe · 08/03/2024 10:36

GAHHHH

American Fiction released on Amazon Prime today! i could have waited and saved that £5.10 i paid
Anyway, i enjoyed it. but thats 2 i have paid to see in last 2 weeks that came to streaming a week later (Poor things being other one).

Past lives to watch this afternoon to finish off the 10.

Watching it again then 😂

Newgirls · 10/03/2024 22:04

thanks for the tip - loved American fiction! So funny and clever and great actors throughout cast.

holdovers was excellent too. I think it’s harder to do comedy.

loads of the others needed a good edit

burnoutbabe · 10/03/2024 22:08

Past lives was very very slow.

So that's all 10 done. Abs going to watch all the Oscar's now

Then will start on the 2023 10 nominations for best picture. But over the next 6 months really. Not all in a month!

Cheshireflamingo · 10/03/2024 22:20

I watched Poor Things last night - it was an interesting concept and visually stunning but I found all of the sex scenes a bit much. Genuinely not a prude, but it all felt a bit gratuitous.

AnotherEmma · 10/03/2024 22:26

Have (finally) watched and enjoyed Past Lives. Beautiful film and the male lead was excellent, I thought.
