I watched it last night with my DH and 16 and 13 year old DSs.
Powerful, emotional, magnificent and amazing scenery. You just forget you are watching a movie.
Highly recommended!

Thanks for this recommendation, really can't wait to watch!

Fluorescentgem · 11/01/2024 09:36

Loved this

Justcallmebebes · 11/01/2024 10:37

Is this on Netflix?

VesperLind · 11/01/2024 10:40

Watched it, also watched the original film based on the book “Alive”. Studied the case as part of philosophy module at university. Do a bit wider reading about what actually happened and what happened in the aftermath.

Is this on Netflix?

Yes Grin

Tootytoot78 · 11/01/2024 14:31

I read Alive by Piers Paul Read back in the 70's.
One of the many things that amazed me was that Nando and Roberto walked for TEN days out of the mountains, not just walked down a smooth path but had to mountain climb in ordinary clothes and rugby boots.

The love for their families and friends plus their faith kept them going. Extraordinary young men.

It’s amazingly told! Just saw it with the cinema with a q&a with the Spanish director. His passion for the people involved both survivors and those who died is so clear. Hugely recommended.

FijiSea · 14/01/2024 12:56

Watched this on Friday and absolutely loved it.
So much better than Alive movie.
It was atmospheric and emotional and the scenery etc was stunning.
I thought the make up to show how degraded and run down they all got was very good too.

SoIdentifying · 14/01/2024 17:37

We watched this last night and absolutely loved it. It shows the determination ,
ingenuity and resilience of people in such an awful situation. Of course there are grim bits - the actual plane crash is one of the worst I have ever seen portrayed but overall just wonderful. You can't help but shed a tear or two . Reading about the survivors today is inspiring too.

Cooroo · 14/01/2024 21:15

I will definitely watch this- but I also recommend the ITN Drama Doc on Channel 5 which includes a number of survivors narrating and is fascinating.

EasternStandard · 14/01/2024 21:17

So glad others have watched it

It was powerful, beautiful and incredibly well done

ManchesterBea · 15/01/2024 12:07

Relentless, and so sad, but a remarkable film. So well realised, and I agree the Make Up does need a special mention!

Definitely not a light-hearted, but I feel like it's probably an accurate depiction. Can't exactly say I enjoyed it. But I'm pleased I watched it.

PuppyMonkey · 15/01/2024 12:11

Another one who loved this. So harrowing but very moving and life-affirming too.

FijiSea · 15/01/2024 14:50

I think it could win an Oscar , maybe for best foreign language film ? I will keep a close eye on the nominations when they are announced …

EasternStandard · 15/01/2024 15:06

I should read the book. I can’t believe they survived that first night when they stayed too long

SusanSHelit · 15/01/2024 15:09

I would also recommend the ladbible tv youtube interview with one of the survivors. Absolutely harrowing

FijiSea · 15/01/2024 15:26

I watched that yesterday @SusanSHelit .

Abracadabra12345 · 17/01/2024 17:36

I'm going to watch this tonight. The current very cold weather is a definite sensory aid

FijiSea · 18/01/2024 12:43

Just read this morning that Society of the Snow has been nominated for a Bafta in the non English language section.

HairyQueenofSnots · 20/01/2024 16:19

Just finished it.

It's so moving - I could sit here and sob. What a lovely film.

Hohofortherobbers · 20/01/2024 17:01

Looking forward to watching this, I read miracle in the andes by nando perez, really recommend.

Thegiantofillinois · 21/01/2024 10:43

I remember watching Alive, at the same age ds watched sos, but this was way better.
It's a long film, but we barely moved through the whole thing. For me, it was the way the camaraderie and pragmatism were depicted and the moments where they were able to find humour, in spite of the situation.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 21/01/2024 10:46

I saw this at a private preview last year with the director and one of the survivors.

It is moving and well done.

Clearinguptheclutter · 21/01/2024 10:49

Being lazy- can someone tell me if it’s available the Spanish language on Netflix i.e. with subtitles
my colleague told me that it’s it’s dubbed which I hate but perhaps it depends on settings

watched the Alive film (with Ethan Hawke I think?) a few times but I bet this is miles better
