I watched it last night with my DH and 16 and 13 year old DSs.
Powerful, emotional, magnificent and amazing scenery. You just forget you are watching a movie.
Highly recommended!

You can change the language settings on Netflix so you can choose to watch in original Spanish with subs or dubbed

Oh great thanks @Mybestusername and @EasternStandard

Well deserved!

I have watched this and then had to watch it again the next day as I felt I had to absorb it all again. It was just amazing. Such a powerful and moving film. I remember Alive very well but this made Alive feel like a Disney film…! I’ve gone into a bit of a rabbit hole and been watching lots of interviews with the survivors and reading their books. The detail in the film from these is just astounding. Find it so interesting they actually shot parts of the film in the actual location too. Fully deserves all the awards.

Yes , I was exactly the same afterwards , watched all the documentaries on you tube and interviews etc.
So well made and my favourite film I’ve watched in a long time.
Yes really hope it wins at Baftas and Oscar’s.

@Tootytoot78 I read Alive by Piers Paul Read back in the 70's.
I read this when I was in Perugia. I had run out of English language books, and someone gave it to me, and assured me that it was excellent. I was reluctant to read it because I assumed it would be cheap sensationalism. Couldn't have been further from the truth. Piers Paul Read got it exactly right. He really impressed me to the extent that when I got home to Australia, I read most of his books. He seems to show true compassion.

For me, having read the book made the 1993 movie suffer by comparison when I ultimately saw it.

This gave me the bump and I’ve started reading it

Seems very good so far

Brilliant film. The crash scene is pretty graphic.

Pigeonqueen · 12/02/2024 09:53

This book is amazing- made me cry and gave me goosebumps. I’ve read just about every survivor account etc there is and Nando’s one is my favourite-

Miracle In The Andes: The True Story of Surviving 72 Days on the Mountain Against All Odds https://amzn.eu/d/5YuQXcw

EasternStandard · 24/02/2024 17:40

Coming back to this as I finished the book

I am a bit bereft as it was so good

I cried at the reunion parts

It was so well done, the film even stepped back from some stuff and it talked about what the parents were doing to search

Incredibly well written, beautiful and interesting

Watching now. Amazing. And having watched The Prey recently, a bit less stressful!

Brumbies · 25/02/2024 18:11

A very good dramatisation of a horrific event.

Only one criticism, where did they all shave?

Do you mean as in the film they all looked like they’d shaved?

In one of the survivors books I’ve read they talked about how they rigged up some metal to a glass bottle to melt snow into water and run into the bottle so they could drink and wash with it - it was painstakingly slow but it did work and meant they could all have an (icy) wash and some of them did shave. They all had toiletries etc in their luggage.

Oh, this annoyed me too. Then I got to wondering why some men sprout beards more easily than others, which sent me down a Google rabbit hole.

Anyway. If any of the men had native American ancestry, they may have not really grown much beard.

Pigeonqueen · 25/02/2024 21:43

If you google the original photos from immediately when they were rescued (before showering etc) there’s a mixture of some with beards, some without.

Clearinguptheclutter · 26/02/2024 09:21

Re shaving I assumed tbh that they all appears clean shaven for continuity- as films are usually filmed in non-chronological order

some may have done but I find it very difficult to believe that they were all clean shaven until the end

Clearinguptheclutter · 26/02/2024 09:22

Anyway I thought it was an absolutely beautifully made film about a tragic, sad event. Music score was spellbinding.

Sletty · 05/03/2024 23:31

Beautifully told. I too have went down the rabbit hole and reading everything I can on this story.

CalmConfident · 23/03/2024 10:51

Watched this last night and loved it. One thing though….they had a lighter and did not burn anything???

In the book they cover this, they burn some crates to cook at times as some won’t eat the raw stuff

But it’s done sparingly as there are not many crates, plus the weather needed to be good

CalmConfident · 23/03/2024 16:22

Thank you !
