How can I get my 6ft, 14 year old son in to a fifteen certificated film at the cinema?

Some ideas others have come up-

Make him non-binary or disabled, people will not have the brass-neck to question his identity.

Slip the person a tenner.

Give him a fake beard a mask to put on?

We took 5ft10 13 yo DS2 to see Oppenheimer as he really wanted to see it.

I explained to the cinema that we had forgotten his ID and they were happy to let him in.

I am very glad they did, it was a brilliant film and he thoroughly enjoyed it

I shall put away my coat with the big pockets 🤣

My 17 year old DD gets ID'd for 12 films. But maybe our local cinema is just super strict?

And she's disabled, so, surprise surprise, it turns out that's not a way to escape checking Hmm

Probably not as far fetched as a suggestion as you are hoping for OP, but how about:

Tell him he's welcome to give it a try and see if they'll let him through without ID, but they might check, and they might turn him away, and missing out on a movie isn't the end of the world.

If it's Oppenheimer, it's looooong, quite boring in parts, has the kind of full frontal nudity and sex scenes that I wouldn't want to be sitting next to my teenage son for. Not worth the fuss IMO.

Boring?? You have to be kidding!

It is a brilliant film and deals with one of the most major events of the last 100 years!

The sex was really very tame and I had no qualms about watching the film with both my teenage DS's present, and neither did they as far as I could see.

Both of my kids have been ID'd for 15 films whist they were with us. Ds was 15 at the time and dd was 18. We had to get someone to send us a copy of ds's passport on our phone.

Book online then walk in with confidence and they are less likely to ask. Not sure this will work but back in the day, carefully applied tippex could change an 8 to a 6 on the date of birth of a college card. Then you put it in a purse/wallet with the little plastic window over it and show it quickly, and with confidence.

Comefromaway · 04/08/2023 19:29

there is a way that would work I reckon.

buy two sets of tickets to films starting at around the same time. Walk through the desk and show the tickets for the PG or 12A film, then once through there are rarely any staff beyond that point so go into the screen showing the 15 film.

Pieceofpurplesky · 04/08/2023 19:50

Friend and I took outer 2 16 year olds. DS 6ft and friends DD looked way older. They got asked for ID - 16 year olds don't tend to have anything they accept though.

Chuffed for you, I really am, but yes it was long and rambling enough that all 3 of us in my party dozed off in parts. Yes it's an important event in history but there was so much unnecessary detail in the film. And yes I find it squicky watching sex scenes in the presence of my teenage boys. Find that you don't, but why do you feel the need to challenge me on it? It's not an uncommon thing.

No one will check if he is 6ft.

Update: We got in! @justasmalltownmum was correct.

Find a small independent cinema, the big chains usually stick to the rules, ds is 19 & got asked for ID.

SirSidneyRuffDiamond · 06/08/2023 15:15

It's very hit and miss at our local Cineworld. Generally older women ask DS (16) for ID as do taller men. Shorter men and younger women don't check his ID. Also they are very strict about what ID they will accept. Passport: yes. 16-17 Railcard (with photo): no! Even though we needed to show his passport to get the railcard.

Buy plane tickets to the most dangerous country you can find.
Once you and your son are there, throw all your clothes into the largest body of water you can find.
Then go on foot to the nearest border and cross.

Start a new life.

Don't come back to the UK until you hear this film has either been rebooted or remade, and see that freely.

Delatron · 06/08/2023 21:40

Think it depends on the cinema. They didn’t even have anyone checking our tickets at Empire (but they seem to have given up in general). 13 and 14 year old DSs really enjoyed it and didn’t find it long. Good history lesson I thought. Could have done without the sex scenes but I’m sure they’ve seen worse by now.

Delatron · 06/08/2023 21:42

I thought it was brilliant. Not boring at all and I normally hate 3 hour films. Just seen you got in. Doesn’t surprise me.

Ahsoka2001 · 09/08/2023 23:06

I work at a cinema. If your DS was found to be underaged after being let into the showing, the usher who served you could have lost their job.

Why did you do this OP? It's absolutely no different to a 16 year old being served alcohol or let into a nightclub. It's playing with people's livelihoods.

You could have cost the cinema its licence or the people who served you their jobs :(

It is also against the terms and conditions of your ticket to take your own food and drink onto the premises. A member of staff could quickly lose their job for allowing you in with stuff in your bag.

So I hope you don't do that either.

If you're talking about Cineworld, ODEON or Vue then this is NOT true! And I say that as someone who works at one of these chains. Taking your own food in is fine as long as it's not hot or alcoholic.
