How can I get my 6ft, 14 year old son in to a fifteen certificated film at the cinema?

Some ideas others have come up-

Make him non-binary or disabled, people will not have the brass-neck to question his identity.

Slip the person a tenner.

Give him a fake beard a mask to put on?

@fruitstick being with an adult is irrelevant - it’s not “15 unless you’re with an adult”. The local cinemas are us are all very strict and no ID means no entry and no refund.

I'm not saying the rule is different, I'm just saying that, anecdotally, I haven't found this an issue.

@greenteaandmarshmallows they checked very specifically that his date was correct. And that of each of his friends.

Ah. I see. Well that's good I guess that they are enforcing the law.

Firsttimecaller · 03/08/2023 22:20

I have once advised DD to use the school's "show my homework app" which has a photo & her DOB as 15yo rarely have official ID and I don't like her taking a passport out of the house/out of my sight.

deplorabelle · 03/08/2023 22:24

Note that the film does depict suicide (not graphically but unmistakably) which I'd be far more worried about than the nudity.

Elsiebear90 · 03/08/2023 22:24

They used to ask for ID when I was 15 which was 18 years ago, it’s not a new thing. I remember having to bring my passport to see films with my friends. You can hope they don’t ID him, but there’s no guarantee.

Step one, get a long massive coat
Step two, put him on your shoulders
Step three, walk in to cinema like a boss

😂😂😂

SemperIdem · 03/08/2023 22:26

They’re not likely to ask if he’s with you. If they do, it’ll be his date of birth, so he just needs to confidently say whatever dob makes him 15.

It was an over 20 years ago now, but I don’t recall cinema workers giving that much of a shit about who was viewing what film. I saw many a 15, as a very young looking 13 year old.

JimnJoyce · 03/08/2023 22:31

I went to the cinema for a 15 cert on Sunday with my 14 yr old DD. Nobody cared

megletthesecond · 03/08/2023 22:36

16yo DS and his mate, both 6ft 3, were ID'd for Oppenheimer. Luckily they both had their provisional licences on them.

FrangipaniBlue · 03/08/2023 22:43

My 5'11" 15 year old was asked for ID to see a 15 cert film at the weekend.

Is he going with you @MarxyBoy or his mates? If it's with you I doubt he will get asked. DS hasn't been asked before with us.

I think he was only asked at the weekend because there was no adult with them so staff were double checking.

RugbyMom123 · 03/08/2023 22:48

It is a bit ridiculous considering the horrendous things which end up on Twitter.

MumblesParty · 03/08/2023 22:52

My 5’5” age 14 DS and his similar height 13 year old friend went to see Oppenheimer on their own last weekend. Bought tickets, strolled in, not asked for ID. Some cinemas are clearly stricter than others.

heartbunny · 03/08/2023 22:52

Nobody questioning the blatant vile attitude to disability or identity then, can't be a real question 🙄

Tacocatgoatcheesepizza · 03/08/2023 22:52

Why are people blaming cinemas for being petty? It’s literally the law just like not selling alcohol to under 18’s. Cinemas are also at risk of losing their licence if they do not check ages and let underage children into films.

iamjustwinginglife · 03/08/2023 22:55

I took my 14 year old DD to watch a 15...we just booked the tickets online and walked in. I think they're more likely to check ID for a group who look under age rather than a child with parent.

Airdustmoon · 03/08/2023 22:59

When me and my friends were teenagers and wanted to sneak into 18s that we were too young for, we’d check what films were showing on the neighbouring screens. Buy a ticket for nice 12A rated Barbie that’s showing in screen 4 and then just walk into Oppenheimer in screen 5 once you’re past the person checking the tickets - sorted!

CatsSnore · 03/08/2023 22:05

Or take his passport. A citizenship card is much cheaper than a passport if he hasn't got one already.

He is 14 and wants to get into a 15-rated film. An official ID card/passport is definitely not going to achieve that!

llareggub · 03/08/2023 23:01

My son got IDed going to see Oppenheimer. He’s 17 next month, is 6 foot, shaves and hasn’t looked under 15 since he was about 13!

Nevertheless, he and his mates weren’t allowed in until they’d shown ID. Luckily they accepted a screenshot of his passport.

YarisKaris · 03/08/2023 23:03

How exactly would you make him look disabled Confused

Took our 14 yo to Oppenheimer last week and weren't questioned. Maybe it's because they're non binary 🙄

Alainlechat · 03/08/2023 23:08

I had to send a photo of her passport to my 15 year old the other week before the cinema would let her in, her taller younger friend did not get asked for ID.

SleepingStandingUp · 03/08/2023 23:13

When I went they were Def checking mid teens with parents for ID. I was impressed, I didn't think they'd really bother but he very politely told her he wasn't losing his job for her.

Sorry op, you either but a fake id or wait for it come out on dvd

SleepingStandingUp · 03/08/2023 23:14

CatsSnore · 03/08/2023 22:04

The cinemas have really got petty with this in the last few years. It's very frustrating.

You could get him a citizenship card. It's a valid form of ID and will be accepted.

Only if it's fake, he's too young

Ah yes, because it's petty for a company to obey the law.

They can be fined for letting under 15s into a 15 movie

Youthinkyoureuniqueyourejustastatistic · 03/08/2023 23:22

Haha. This reminded me of trying to get into Kevin and Perry Go Large when I was about 12/13 and not getting in. We went to watch U571 instead. Haha. Bit of a difference.

Mirabai · 03/08/2023 23:25

Fake beard obviously.
