I want to see it but is it depressing or sad... I understand its subject matter may ultimately be but throughout?

Nope.

Nope. If anything the movie is massively downplay the consequences of Hiroshima's bombing. There is quite a depressing side story

....!! spoiler alert !!.....

about giving up their baby (on a whim and in relative emotional ease!!) for pursuing personal career ambitions and intellectual freedom.

They didn't "give up their baby", he took the baby to some friends to look after for a while because his wife wasn't coping. They got him back.

I didnt fully understand the girlfriend committing suicide - seemed a bit of a side plot that wasn't really explored. They mentioned he was a womaniser but we didn't see others, so why her?

Well, it was included because it's a true story, and because he later had to admit in front of his wife to having spent the night with her. Also because she was a communist party member and his association with her was part of the reason for the contrived downfall.

He was described as a womaniser to let us know he was a womaniser - we didn't need to see all of that played out. He was seeing both women at the same time, and later had an affair with a colleague's wife. I expect he was known to screw around a bit generally, but they couldn't put everything in.

We did see others (it was mentioned at the end about the friend's wife)

I’ve not seen it but family have, and it’s pretty harrowing subject matter- I can’t imagine it’s especially uplifting?

AuroraForever · 29/07/2023 23:27

It’s a fantastic film. Not depressing or sad in the sense that you come away feeing down.

UndercoverCop · 29/07/2023 23:29

I found it interesting and compelling, came out reacting to talk about both the film and the wider subject. It's not like you don't know what's going to happen.

gallop17 · 29/07/2023 23:46

It's less depressing than Barbie Grin
