New Whitney Biopic: thoughts?

I'm just back from the new Whitney biopic, and must say that I was disappointed. Although the lead actress had a good singing voice (assuming it was her), she just didn't move or hold herself like Whitney. The little light-footed skips and shuffle moves Whitney did with her early pop-y songs was gone. I think she was mis-cast.
I also thought they skipped past the demise of the Bobby Brown relationship too quickly. It is a very distressing topic, but domestic abuse is also a serious topic, and one that the world needs to learn from. No woman should ever be in an abusive relationship, either psychological or physical abuse, and telling more of that story may have acted as a warning for others if that makes sense?

The vocals in the movie are actually Whitney. I enjoyed the film but I think it’s clear that some of the more delicate aspects have been sidestepped.

Oh, that makes sense! So the vocals were actually Whitney. Which, in a way, makes my disappointment with the actress greater. She did a good job lip syncing, but she didn't carry herself like Whitney. She didn't move like her or have her gestures. You hear about actors and actresses studying every minor body movement in detail, but it doesn't seem like this actress did. I didn't feel I was watching Whitney. Whereas I did feel like i was watching Elvis in that biopic, and same with Freddie Mercury.

I'm in 2 minds about going as she doesn't have anything about her resembling Whitney and now to hear her movements aren't even similar. I'm so disappointed at the casting.

I've just watched Elvis again and seen Bohemian rhapsody a few times. So well done.

I haven't seen it, but when I saw the trailers I also thought she doesn't look anything like Whitney!

However, I really enjoyed the Aretha Franklin biopic with Jennifer Hudson and she doesn't look like Aretha either. JH also did the vocals in that I believe and although she wasn't exactly like Aretha, she was amazing.

Yes Aretha was amazing. She had her to a T.

I actually really enjoyed it. Although I’m not a die hard Whitney fan so wouldn’t know particularly how close the lead actress got. I did think she was fab though and absolutely gorgeous. It’s a pretty tame biopic though

It was a 12 certificate bit like Queen same writer. I preferred Whitney film to Queen.
I thought the script in both were tame/ thin.
I preferred the cast and music in Whitney.
Personally I prefer 15 certificate for more adult content and gritter scripts.

I’m not a Whitney fan but I loved it. I disagree, I thought the actress was really good. Makes sense that it was Whitney singing though.

I was also surprised they didn’t focus more on Bobby Brown though. A colleague who is much younger than me believed they were just bad for each other and wasn’t aware of any domestic violence.

I'm going Tuesday with some friends.

Dontjudgeme101 · 09/01/2023 06:49

I have seen the film and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Really enjoyed it and got weepy. She was iconic when I was young.

I was wondering if they were careful about the Booby Brown stuff as he is still alive and may sue?

Just seen this a few surprises which I diduknow about her life but won't say too much. Definitely didn't think the actress looked or carried herself like Whitney and I kept thinking it all the way through. However I loved the music and the relationship between her and her manager. I did enjoy it but it definitely could have been more gritty especially with her relationship with Bobby brown.

UselessExLondoner · 22/01/2023 00:49

I enjoyed it and thought the actress that played Whitney was really good. I'm not familiar enough with Whitney to say whether the actress that played her was particularly like her, though.

Funkyslippers · 27/01/2023 13:00

I really enjoyed it. I didn't think it needed to be grittier. She had her demons but I think it was a respectful biopic. It might have been extremely painful tto her family to show any more detail of her drug abuse. I wasn't aware of any domestic abuse even though I think Bobby Brown is a bit of an arse. It was a very toxic relationship

Courgeon · 27/01/2023 13:11

I thought it was entertaining but quite tame/ light on certain aspects. Her family and manager were involved in the making of it however so that likely influenced the overall production. Also I think they were keen to put across that she'd tried drugs before bobby brown and he wasn't the perceived demonic influence that's been portrayed previously. They were no doubt bad for each other!
