Has anyone seen this? Intrigued by all the good reviews but worried it’s too depressing?

OP posts:
Mary46 · 30/12/2022 21:59

Yes op. Good, its quite heavy though. Its not amazing. He is a great actor

pinkdelight · 31/12/2022 07:28

It's well shot and acted but I'm baffled by the rave reviews. I found it a total non-event.

Mary46 · 31/12/2022 12:42

I agree pink. Find some films they so hyped up.

echt · 28/02/2023 05:13

I've just watched this in the cinema and it's astonishing. Very demanding of attention as the lack of conventional storyline (not a criticism) means you can't look away for an instant. Top acting and excellent music.

I'm going back next week to see it again.

ShakinSteven · 28/02/2023 21:41

Just watched this. It's very moving.

Southeastdweller · 01/03/2023 15:53

God, this was boring. And why was Paul Mescal nominated for an Oscar for this?!

Pigletnotatwiglet · 01/03/2023 17:14

This was such a beautiful movie, I loved it but it broke me.

I’ve just seen it and it’s broken me too. It’s very close to home and I’ll be thinking about it for a long time I’m sure.

IrisM22 · 04/03/2023 00:19

I watched it recently and it's still haunting me. Absolutely beautiful and heartbreaking film.

Goawayangryman · 04/03/2023 00:25

I saw it and thought it was just... Ok. I was expecting to be blown away by it but wasn't. The child actor was excellent though.

DuvetDownn · 05/03/2023 20:17

I gave it a solid 5/10.

DuvetDownn · 05/03/2023 20:18

And 4 of the points were because I fancy the actor.

derbylass81 · 06/03/2023 08:49

Is this only in cinemas? Is it on Netflix or anything?

DuvetDownn · 06/03/2023 09:10

i watched it on MUBI.

Motnight · 10/03/2023 22:20

Saw this film a few weeks ago and it has stayed with me. There was a feeling of dread in it from the beginning. I kept waiting for something really horrible to happen to the girl.

Mary46 · 15/03/2023 17:54

It is heavy going but both are great in it. I thought it very drawn out. Its good yes.

Tidsleytiddy · 23/03/2023 18:43

I kept waiting for something to happen then it…didn’t.

Nosecan · 23/03/2023 19:27

The people that didn’t get it… is it because you’ve not had experiences/association with people who have poor mental health? I don’t personally understand how people don’t understand.

Nosecan · 23/03/2023 19:29

Outing, but Paul Mescal is the spit of my brother, who has tried to take his own life. So it was incredibly pertinent.

Edel12345 · 22/04/2023 23:33

Watched it tonight and it broke me too
i just love how it subtly builds …
beautiful, shimmering sadness , love memories
i had tears streaming down my face as the credits rolled

I just loved it and feel it will linger with me a long long time

rubadubdubascrubinahottub · 22/04/2023 23:35

Beautifully described.

I sort of felt like this. Went to see it as nice to see a Scottish based/Scottish characters in a film, and I did feel it was beautifully acted. Other than that I thought it was just middling. I think it still had the feeling of a student film and needed some cutting to make elements of it much clearer.

I don’t think anyone has said they don’t understand the concept of the film. It’s one of my pet hates (always happens to me with A Little Life) when someone implies you must just not understand a piece of cinema/literature/art because you say you don’t think it was very good or don’t see it as exceptional whilst others do. I see that it was beautifully acted from Mescal and handled certain themes well. I don’t think that exempts it from being a middling film.

mewkins · 25/04/2023 10:05

I enjoyed it. Both actors are great. I liked the nostalgic feel of it. I would have preferred a more concrete ending to round it up.

RaspberryMacarons · 29/05/2023 19:45

Just watched Aftersun and thought it was great but God, so depressing.
