Thought it would be enjoyable and am very disappointed.

It is a bottom tier musical, in my opinion, although the actual song 'Oklahoma' is great! My dad went to see it in the cinema when it first came out because he thought it was going to be a western. He was extremely disappointed.

mynameisnotkate · 27/12/2022 12:46

Yeah. The song when the hero is trying to coerce the man with learning difficulties into killing himself is a low point …

CharlotteStreetW1 · 27/12/2022 12:46

I love that film! But then I first saw it about 50 years ago when our tastes were less sophisticated. Has it been on TV? Which channel?

Having said that, I watched My Fair Lady yesterday which I've always loved and I was a bit disappointed - especially now I know Audrey Hepburn didn't do the singing herself and the lip syncing isn't great. (But God she was beautiful!)

You’re all heathens!! It’s a classic!!

SnackyOnassis · 27/12/2022 12:49

Oh the plot is horrible and hideously outdated, but we did it as our school musical many moons ago so I've got such a soft spot for the music. Purely nostalgic though, it's not a quality show!

RenoDakota · 27/12/2022 12:49

It's on right now, Channel 5. Am giving up after a dreadful hour and 45 minutes, with over an hour still to go.

'Oh, what a beautiful mornin'' is genuinely one of my favourite songs from ANY musical - but it does mean that the film peaks WAY too early for me!

There is that.

AuntieDolly · 27/12/2022 13:03

The story is very dark

AuntieDolly · 27/12/2022 13:04

I sat through Meet Me in St Louis and that was even worse!

RenoDakota · 27/12/2022 13:16

Sorry, was being a bit churlish about a film that I know is well loved by some. I do agree that Oh, What A Beautiful Mornin' is a great song.

An absolute added (surprise) bonus this morning was watching Murder At The Gallop just before it, with Margaret Rutherford as Miss Marple. Was very, very funny.

Oh yabvvvu 🙂. It's wonderful! Great music and very funny at times.

Oklahoma is awful as far as the story is concerned. The music is great though.

Try watching 'South Pacific' for something that hasn't aged well. Racism and child exploitation the name but few. Saw it at the theatre over the summer and understood why you don't see it on tv. I loved it when I was 7 (a long, long, time ago).

PuppyMonkey · 27/12/2022 13:20

It goes on far too long and should drop all the very dark stuff - and I’m not talking about I’m Just a a girl who can’t say no.”Grin

Love Oklahoma and South Pacific . They were films of their time. No point pulling them apart by today’s standards .

DD(15) and I watched My Fair Lady yesterday too and she was utterly outraged about Eliza going back to Henry Higgins at the end. Grin

Another one that drives me nuts, but again wonderful songs. Nellie flips from racist to non-racist in 5 minutes. Totally ridiculous.

I love old fashioned musicals. Oklahoma has fantastic songs. I also love South Pacific and Showboat.
