Wolf Creek

Me and dh watched Wolf Creek last week (we hadn't seen it and came across the DVD in a charity shop) and I honestly don't think I've ever been so affected by a film before. I thought the acting was very strong but found it incredibly difficult and heartbreaking to watch. It's definitely the saddest film I've ever seen- I think because it was based on a true story it has more of an affect on you. I felt awful for the two women- it was supposed to be the trip of a lifetime for them and they had their whole lives ahead of them. It really opened my eyes to the dangers of travelling (even in a group and not alone). I was just wondering if anyone else has seen it and if it affected them too x

I saw it years and years ago, and I've never forgotten it. I'm a scary movie buff and I would never watch it again.

Saucery · 01/11/2022 20:30

Saw it years ago, all, apart from the last 15 mins as I just couldn’t take any more. Too real (and I can watch things like Hostel and Saw and not be bothered by them). I had a proper Moment where I thought “why am I putting myself through this, it’s fucking grim”

Tshirtdressandflipflops · 01/11/2022 20:31

@ComeOnThenFanny no I definitely wouldn't watch it again. I've seen online that there's a sequel and I definitely wouldn't watch that either. I'm confident I won't forget it either

The sequel is awful. Gore over scares.

moggerhanger · 01/11/2022 20:34

I watched that alone in the house while DH was away. I thought the cinematography was incredible but the story made me feel angry and rather sullied. Just too bloody bleak. Definitely wouldn't watch it again!

fairydust11 · 01/11/2022 20:35

Yes I saw it years ago - it’s one of those films that does stay with you as it’s based on a true story.

Tshirtdressandflipflops · 01/11/2022 20:36

@moggerhanger I felt so angry as well. I felt so angry and desperate for Kristy during the car chase.

It's the one and only film I wish I'd never watched. I saw it over 10 years ago and still have nightmares about it regularly. I now avoid all torture porn movies.

There's a scene that's indelibly seared on my brain. It's such a harrowing film.

pictish · 01/11/2022 20:42

Yes it does leave an imprint. The actor who played the antagonist (shall we say) is almost too good.

Tshirtdressandflipflops · 01/11/2022 20:42

@Nateismine sorry didn't mean to post before. I've had nightmares about it over the last few days too.

Spoilers

I don't think it can be based on a true story because everybody died? So how would they know what happened to them?

I thought the true story part was just that three people went missing. But the rest had to just be fiction?

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 01/11/2022 20:47

I thought the first movie fascinating, largely because of the powerful performances of the actors and almost magnetic resonance of that landscape, which comes over even on film, almost as a character in its own right. If it was this affecting on film, I can only imagine how amazing it would be to visit the place in reality; definitely one for the bucket list.

The real life parallels with Ivan Milat were discomfiting, though, and as for the second instalment? I'm a die-hard horror, goth and gory movie freak, and even I couldn't make it to the end of that film. I think that's the one and only time that's ever happened to me.

Gave me the tiniest inkling of the hell poor Joanne Lees must have been through on that remote outback road, hiding for ours in the bush to escape her would-be murderer, not knowing if she would ever see the sun rise again.

No movie could ever attempt to capture such a horror. Poor, poor woman.

christmasiscominng · 01/11/2022 20:47

I read that it was banned in Australia. Not sure if true, but there was a huge thing about it damaging the tourist industry as it was so horrific and based on true story

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 01/11/2022 20:48

I'm with you OP ... it affected me too and put me off a lot of horror after. Do not watch Hostel Confused

It was closely based around the backpacker killings perpetrated by Ivan Milat. The characters were thinly disguised but the MO of the killer and fate of the characters was unmistakable. There's a scene in the early part of II that's closely based around the Lees/Falconio case.

Manasprey · 01/11/2022 20:55

It's the horror film that put me off horror films for good. I'm not sure I even watched it to the end, but it must have been about 15 years ago or so. I just reme thinking:"why am I watching this torture of women? What is being gained here?"

Manasprey · 01/11/2022 20:57

On the flip side, I thought The Descent was terrifying, but bloody brilliant.

Ivyonafence · 01/11/2022 20:58

Oh lord, I saw this when it came out and have regretted it ever since.

Incredibly well made and well acted but horrific. It felt so realistic whereas a lot of other horror/gore feels campier.

The guy who plays the killer is an abusive prick in real life. I think he's been charged with domestic violence and can't get work now.

peoplearepeople · 01/11/2022 20:59

I agree op. Like other posters, it's also the film that put me off other horror films, when I used to be a fan of the genre.
There is one scene inparticular that will always stay with me and pops into my head on a semi regular basis. I hate that. 🙁
Eden Lake was another one I felt almost the same about. Just too realistic in many ways.

Djchickpea · 01/11/2022 21:00

Had to stop watching it. Torture porn essentially.

Tshirtdressandflipflops · 01/11/2022 21:01

@peoplearepeople I haven't seen Eden Lake. It was always one I meant to watch but everyone I know that's seen it has said it's too harrowing.

I used to love horror films, but this one actually put me off the whole genre.

Babyg1995 · 01/11/2022 21:06

Watched it years ago then walked home at night on my own don't think I've ever walked so fast.
