Anyone seen it? I saw it tonight. Not exactly enjoyable, but well acted and filmed.
But intensely frustrating to spend the film watching people behaving so stupidly.

But then, without that, there wouldn't be a film.

As I said upthread the premise was daft.
But it won at the Golden Globes.

TicketMasterMind · 15/01/2023 21:00

It’s one of those films that trips you up and spits you out discombobulated at the end of the screening so it’s rattling around in your head for days after as you try to make sense and draw meaning from it.

It is a sort of fable with loads of contradictions. Bleak beautiful simple complex light dark funny despair

Thingshavebecomeweird · 17/01/2023 14:06

I watched it a week ago and Barry and Siobhan have stayed with me. Still thinking about it. Amazing acting and engagement, especially from those characters.

Love the animals too and the supporting cast. Some truly funny, touching moments. And the wardrobe was beautiful and dialogue sharp, drew you in to the story.

Strangely, the grisly elements haven't stayed with me though. But the bastard policeman has.

AllOfThemWitches · 17/01/2023 14:07

I loved it, I think Colm was a prick, not sure if the audience was supposed to like him or not.

DanseAvecLesLoups · 17/01/2023 14:10

I want a miniature donkey, where can you get one?

IVFNewbie · 17/01/2023 14:15

I expected more from it TBH. Not as good as In Bruges.

This is a great watch - behind the scenes looks at the characters, cinematography, costumes, locations

LadyEloise1 · 24/01/2023 13:53

Lots of Oscar nominations, delighted for all those involved but still don't rate the movie. Smile

That's brilliant

Januarysickandtired · 24/01/2023 15:59

Excellent filming and beautiful scenery which somehow made what happened much worse. It is a haunting film and not one I will forget quickly.

VivaDixie · 27/01/2023 12:53

I watched it with DH a few days ago, we have been really looking forward to it having loved In Bruges.

DH hated it, (he usually loves thought provoking movies), I wasn't sure. But as PP have said it has stayed with me and I am reading threads about it!!

I started off hating Dominic (but did giggle when he first came into the pub saying 'ooh there are women') but as the movie went on my heart broke for him - especially the big reveal about the bastard policeman.

I thought this was a really good deep dive review - the comments are very well informed.

It’s not “entertainment” in a feel good way - IME it lulls you in with light comedy and scenery and then turns on you with dark suffocating unfathomable twists and relationships. Leaves you feeling shaken up “unfinished” - quite frustrated with loads of unsatisfactory and unanswered feelings and questions.

JaneFondue · 29/01/2023 18:40

I mostly loved it. Really beautiful on friendship, loneliness, the misery of life. Did find it unnecessarily gory and Colm illogical, but still give it a 9 out of ten.

Newmum110 · 29/01/2023 19:17

I loved it, didn't know too much about it before I watched it & was glad of that. McDonagh always has an unusual plot so that is to be expected. Fab acting also.

LadyEloise1 · 02/02/2023 17:53

An Irish journalist trounced it in the Daily Mail last evening. He said it depicts the Irish as drunks and imbeciles. He states that those "woke" Hollywood types are lauding a movie that depicts the Irish as cruel, dim witted eejits.

I myst say I have to agree with him.
As I wrote before, the premise of the movie is daft. As if a celebrated traditional musician would do such a thing to himself because his ex friend dared to speak to him. 🙄
Bonkers.
I'm disappointed that Martin Mc Donogh would depict "his people" as such.

A lot of critics dispute whether he essentially creates buffoonish, cretinous etc Stage Irish characters or whether he is being ironic about historical depictions of Irishness onstage, and is actually interrogating them — I think the ‘ironic’ reading is easier to evidence in earlier stage plays like The Cripple of Inishmaan, but I haven’t seen Banshees (though I believe it’s based on an unproduced play from the same period as Cripple).

Gymmum82 · 02/02/2023 18:54

I watched it because in Bruges is one of my favourite ever films but to be honest I didn’t enjoy it at all. Too bleak. Too odd. Too boring. I didn’t get it

WestwardBlue · 05/02/2023 12:44

I’m Irish, Galway, with relatives currently living on one of the islands. It’s billed as a black comedy. Which it is. No issues with it. Delighted it will boost tourism locally.

AllOfThemWitches · 06/02/2023 16:28

It's one film. I'm not Irish and I don't assume, because of watching it, that all Irish people are 'cruel and dim witted.' Just because an Irish person didn't like it, doesn't mean it's an objectively bad film.

And no, most people wouldn't cut their fingers off but this character wanted an excuse to not be a memorable musician. He didn't have the talent or the inclination but with no fingers, he physically can't play so it doesn't matter anymore.

Bunionbabe · 07/03/2023 10:38

I think the film is a sort of metaphor for the Irish civil war and people's stubborn, pig headed refusal to compromise even when the consequences are dire. Cut off your nose to spite yourself rather than back down or be seen to lose face.

LadyEloise1 · 07/03/2023 11:18

But most viewers of the film wouldn't know anything about the Irish Civil War so the metaphor would be wasted on them.
I'm delighted for all involved who already have received awards and hoping Oscars too will be received by cast and crew.
Barry was outstanding in his role.
I'm delighted too that it will bring more visitors to Ireland's beautiful Wild Atlantic Way, which will help our economy.
I still think the premise is daft thoughSmile.

TheDanceOfTheTomato · 07/03/2023 11:25

I really liked it and it reminded me how much more I am enjoying Colin Farrell's work since he ditched blockbusters and started making quirky, smaller production films. I think his good looks may have shoe horned him into roles he never excelled at in his earlier career. Now he's (presumably) making films he is more interested in and his acting game is immense.

DoubleChocolateBrownies · 07/03/2023 11:50

Hated it. Thought Barry was good but the film pointlessly depressing and didn’t make me think about friendship or any of those themes. But then I don’t like Martin McDonagh’s stuff. A bit like Guy Ritchie films - the kind of thing I’d have really enjoyed aged 14 but find very boring now

I really don’t understand why any of them other than Barry have been Oscar nomd for acting

DoubleChocolateBrownies · 07/03/2023 12:20

Loved the costume design though. Wouldn’t have made it to the end without those collared jumpers

LadyEloise1 · 07/03/2023 14:52

I thought Kerry Condon was very deserving of her BAFTA.

The one Irish actor who I believe was robbed of an Oscar was Richard Harris in The Field.
He was (I think ) a middle class boy from Limerick city but he played the Bull Mc Cabe so magnificently.
To me great acting is being able to play a thoroughly believable character from a background so different from your own yet you nail it. And Richard Harris did. In spades.
