Anyone seen it? I saw it tonight. Not exactly enjoyable, but well acted and filmed.
But intensely frustrating to spend the film watching people behaving so stupidly.

But then, without that, there wouldn't be a film.

I hated it. Loved Dominic and the donkey and some of the views, but nothing else. Found it both dull and horrific at the same time and also bizarrely very predictable. I'm glad some people loved it though as we came out saying we couldn't imagine who would enjoy it.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 02/11/2022 16:25

Just back from seeing it this afternoon. I am still digesting it but I thought it was very good but pretty gloomy, as did my companion. Fantastic scenery. Really excellent acting. I would go and see anything written by Martin McDonagh. I've got to say, I am very glad I don't have anyone like the witch woman living near me.

fairislecable · 02/11/2022 16:37

I have just watched it. After some of the comments I was concerned it would be very dour, but it was really funny, well written, acting was fantastic and the landscape was wonderful.

I found it gripping (and a bit grisly) but I really loved it.

hopeishere · 02/11/2022 18:08

I liked it. My gripe was it's unlikely the sister would have had two overcoats. And the accents were all over the place.

Dominic was amazing. I think him using the word touché was to show there was more to him than met the eye.

Made the west of Ireland look amazing.

Forcedoutoflurking · 06/11/2022 00:40

Absolutely loved it. It was a complete feast for the eyes and the acting and dialogue was sublime. Would happily watch it again

MyBeloved · 06/11/2022 01:24

I thought it was shite- sorry!

StopsWalkingToSneeze · 06/11/2022 06:15

Myself and DH really enjoyed it apparently not as much as the woman a couple of rows in front who was laughing out loud or gasping in shock throughout.

Thought the acting was wonderful and particularly liked Colin Farrell’s burgundy knitted shirt.

Forcedoutoflurking · 06/11/2022 09:29

Yes I was very admiring of Colin's wardrobe, a lovely blue jumper as well! A great boost for Ireland's tourism and its knitwear I'd say!

EBearhug · 06/11/2022 09:35

Some of the language used was not suitable for the time, even in 1980s (never mind the 1920's) Ireland no-one used the words "guys", no one from a working class/farming background would say touché.

Yes, I found that too. I found it quite hard to work out just when the film was set until they has the calendar scene, which may say more about some of the rural households i knew in my childhood, but it was partly the language making me think it must be much later than the 1920s.

BedTaker · 06/11/2022 09:44

My second-generation British Asian and Somali students recognised that when we did The Cripple of Irishman

Lol

@Paulo1
Horses can't vomit, so I imagine donkeys can't either.

Paulo1 · 06/11/2022 17:50

@ByTheGrace - thank you 😀

Taytocrisps · 10/11/2022 00:13

I saw it tonight. The film's had very mixed reviews so I wasn't sure what to expect. For those of you haven't seen it, there's a lot of humour at the start of the film but it takes rather a dark turn and there's a downward spiral. The ending is quite bleak. At the beginning of the film I was all, "Yeah, yeah, there's Colin Farrell", but he was totally convincing as Pádraic. Well, except for the accent. Barry Keoghan was a revelation as Dominic. He must be on a real high, after the birth of his baby son a few months ago and now all the acclaim for his role in Banshees. Jenny the Donkey was just adorable.

I liked it overall although I can't say that I enjoyed it exactly. I'm glad I saw it in the cinema. I think it would lose a lot of its impact on the small screen. It was very thought provoking and had a lot to say about friendship, conflict (as well as the conflict at the heart of the film, the Civic War was raging on the mainland), loneliness, the loss of innocence, the claustrophobia of life in a small community etc.

The old woman/banshee reminded me of Peig Sayers <shudders at the memory>.

Spidey66 · 13/11/2022 12:13

I saw it last night. Loved every moment of it, the story, the dark moments, the comic moments, the scenery, the close up shots of animals, the lot. Best film I've seen for a while.

liftthatup · 15/11/2022 13:36

We went to see it two days ago and it’s still playing on my mind. This never happens! Really thought provoking. Beautiful, shocking, laugh out loud and tragic. I think I loved it.

Niftythrifter · 22/12/2022 22:35

I loved it. It’s definitely a film that needs to be seen on the big screen.

Gensola · 22/12/2022 22:40

I absolutely hated it 😬 the scenery was lovely and I loved the sister’s clothes, but apart from that I thought it was really boring and unnecessarily gory.

echt · 27/12/2022 02:53

I've just come back from seeing it and loved it despite some odd language use: "tough love". Great comedy, and lovely animals.

Not sure about Dominic's not knowing touch, he could have picked it up at school, same as his repeated "faint heart", the second part unsaid "never won fair lady". And yes, he could well have had some basic schooling.

The actors were all splendid. I loved the opening shot of the fields, it making think that they would all have names.

BarrelOfOtters · 28/12/2022 21:19

Watched it at home. Think that was a mistake, should have seen it at the cinema. I sort of was drawn in but mostly not.

TowerStork · 28/12/2022 21:26

Found it really boring and couldn't care less what the characters did. I don't get the hype at all. The west of Ireland looks lovely though

SlowHorses67 · 31/12/2022 15:54

I enjoyed it, funny, great acting, beautiful scenery, bit different to the usual stuff. It is dark though, you’d need to be in the mood for it.

LadyEloise1 · 31/12/2022 18:22

You really had to suspend disbelief - the premise of the story and what the Brendan Gleeson character did was utterly daft.
Barry Keoghan was fantastic as was the sister and Jenny 🥰
The "Banshee" was scary !!!!
The scenery was utterly breathtaking.
Great to see D'Unbelievables back together. Happy memories of their mad shows.
I'd love to hear Martin Mc Donagh discussing the film.
I loved his 3 Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 02/01/2023 06:55

I think it was Colin's best ever performance and Barry excellent also and the sister of Colin's in the movie was outstanding. The poor donkey. It was more like a play than a movie but really good performances and enjoyed it for that and the scenery.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 02/01/2023 06:57

To LadyEloise I loved 3 Billboards also and watched it a few times. Last night my 22 year old son and I watched Pulp Fiction again and one of the best movies ever watched as totally engrossed in the characters and their dialogue and just a great movie and the music also and Tarantino just has a way of directing that is so different and draws you in.

Total agree with you. Biggest pile of shite I’ve ever watched
