Is anyone planning on seeing it?
I won't lie, I'm a huge Harry fan, though the premise appeals to me anyway so I would see it regardless.
I have tickets for Wednesday.

Me, I definitely want to see it. I love the premise and I love HS. It's got pretty rubbish reviews though. And then there's all the drama around its production. Interesting stuff!

I've been following all the drama, spitgate was hilarious 😂

I saw it today and it is one of the best films I have ever seen! Really unexpected!

Oh good !
I really want to see it .

JohnsShirt · 23/09/2022 21:11

I loved it too, did not see that coming.
Also, I want to be Florence Pugh in the table scene!

No spoilers please as I haven't seen it, but I'm really pleased to hear people enjoyed it!

NightmareSlashDelightful · 24/09/2022 10:06

Saw it yesterday. It’s not very good, IMO. Styles is terrible. Gemma Chan is brilliant though. (Love her.) And some of the cinematography is good.

It feels like it’s going for that Tom Ford aesthetic (from A Single Man and Nocturnal Animals) but it doesn’t work, ultimately. It’s gimmicky, with too much style and not enough substance.

OliverBabish · 24/09/2022 10:07

I’m surprised by the good reviews on here - I’ve only heard bad things so far. I’ll keep an eye on this thread and maybe be persuaded to go

JohnsShirt · 24/09/2022 12:50

Florence Pugh was by far the stand out, but I've read criticism of Harry's accent.
That's how he speaks!
He has gone a bit transatlantic of late, but his actual accent is in the film.
V much looking forward to My Policeman now.

I went yesterday. From a storyline point of view I would have happily waited to stream it - it left me with questions but more "wtf" rather than "that was amazing." In fact some of the audience were laughing out loud at the plot twists which rather took me out of the moment.

However, I loved the way it looked, Florence Pugh gives a powerhouse performance and has one gorgeous costume change after another. So enjoyed it regardless.

Billyhargrovesmullet · 27/09/2022 08:59

I really enjoyed it, Florence Pugh was amazing, Harry was the weakest link in it for me he just didn’t have much range in emotions, Chris Pine was very good but I was disappointed by the way it ended

Ein · 27/09/2022 09:09

I’m going to and am excited! The trailer looks amazing and the plot intriguing.

Willowswave · 27/09/2022 14:22

I loved it! Won’t give spoilers. Fantastic acting from everyone, especially Florence Pugh and Harry Styles. But really all the actors are great.

In feeling it’s a little like Behind Her Eyes, except without the paranormal stuff.

Visually beautiful.

My only slight criticism is it’s too slow in the middle / early second half - they give us some clues and we kinda get the idea of what’s happening, but then there are no new clues for a long time and it becomes repetitive so I was a bit 🥱 even played on my phone for ten minutes. I guess that’s the director’s fault. But then it gets better again, although never quite recaptures the brilliance of the first half.

I enjoyed the twist at the end, although a few visual details there really spoiled the realism (screenwriter needed to research tech a bit better!)

In my view this is a thriller / haunting horror story aimed at women, and men just won’t get it. So I can see why it had some bad reviews. Horror stories find the viewer’s secret fear, drag it out into the light and play with it. This movie does that brilliantly for wives and particularly housewives, not sure what everyone else will make of it.

VinoDino · 27/09/2022 20:14

@Willowswave hope you didn't play on your phone for 10 mins in the cinema!

I'm on the fence. Hated it to begin with, style over substance, was giving me anxiety. Florence carried the whole film, Harry Styles though not bad lacked screen presence. Absolutely no charisma. Could've been 20/30 mins shorter. Once I knew it was starting to be wrapped up I relaxed a bit. 5/10.

Willowswave · 27/09/2022 22:30

@VinoDino yes I did, but don’t worry - there were only 4 other people in that showing and none of them were in my row or anywhere near me…

primeoflife · 01/10/2022 07:43

I really enjoyed it but hated the sex scene. Too explicit and unnecessary!! I know my daughter's and their friends who are just 15 and hated watching it. A suggestion would be enough!

Sturmundcalm · 01/10/2022 14:12

I liked it - didn't love it and agree with some PPs that it could have done with being slightly shorter but overall I thought it was good. And while the women were much stronger overall I though Harry Styles was fine - and the twist made him v suitable casting!

WhenDovesFly · 01/10/2022 14:25

Went last night. Harry Styles' acting was mediocre but Florence Pugh was great. Sex scene was a bit OTT. The ending left a lot of questions unanswered.

Not a film I'd describe as great.

genie10 · 01/10/2022 15:44

I've seen it and thought it was awful.

pisspants · 01/10/2022 23:45

I went to see it tonight and thought it was really good. I don't want to say the 3 films it was in the middle of a venn diagram with in case I give anything away but I thought it was really interesting and the twist was very unexpected.
I agree that Florence Pugh's acting was brilliant. Harry was ok.

Womencanlift · 02/10/2022 23:03

Florence was great and at points I thought this is an Oscar winner for her but It ends with more questions than answers which I think will impact the awards it wins. To me it could have done with about 20 minutes more (or cut some stuff out to keep the original length) to answer a lot of things that were left hanging

A possible sequel? There is definitely a story there but it’s whether the people involved would want to do it with all the bts drama

Windbeneathmybingowings · 02/10/2022 23:07

I saw it. I see a lot of films, I’m not a big hits only cinema goer, maybe go 3x a week sometimes. It was awful. Looks amazing so well done to set design, but very poor plot line covered many many times other films in much better ways. Harry Styles performance was just bland and nothing. There is nothing that makes you want to keep watching except Florence Pugh. She carries it entirely.

I’m glad I went but it’s all so very obvious and just embarrassing at times.

JohnsShirt · 02/10/2022 23:10

I'm really interested to see how he is in My Policeman.

OP posts:
Mushroo · 02/10/2022 23:16

I saw it and loved the cinematography and costumes. Harry Styles wasn’t as bad as I expected and I enjoyed it, but on reflection it was a bit, empty?

SPOILERS

  1. The earthquakes were never explained.
  2. why was there a plane?
  3. Why would it have been a programmed so that the men would die. How would that even work as it’s virtual reality.
  4. why did no one notice Florence Pugh was missing?!
  5. why were the eggs missing yolks?
  6. was the brainwashing / medical treatment happening in real life?
  7. How did Harry Styles earn enough to pay for all this?

It felt a bit like a poorly explained black mirror episode.

Womencanlift · 02/10/2022 23:50

Comments on the spoilers above

  1. Yes! That’s one of the things I think they should have taken time at the end to explain
  2. I read a theory that Shelley (Gemma Khan) plotted that/added it in to help women escape. it’s plausible
  3. Are they dead too outside of the experiment?
  4. I guess that Jack set it up to look like they had moved away and she quit her job to stop people looking for them
  5. Glitch in the matrix???
  6. I think so. I think when the men in red jump suits turn up the person is taken to/treated by the doctor in real life and he does basically a reset of the fake memories
  7. Maybe because it’s new then it didn’t cost much and as he is ‘awake’ when the husbands are are at work, he maybe has a basic job to cover their rent and basic needs

So many unanswered questions. It felt like there should be half the film taken up by the 50s world (ie the film we saw) and the other half to explain what it was all about and why people did it. Would have been good to know the real life backgrounds of the other couples too.

I know that Bunny knew what was happening, did her husband?
