Has anyone seen this?

I like the premise but the trailer makes it look not good...is it just a crap trailer?

thanks.

The Guardian review was very vague but suggested it was meh. The viewing figures suggest that lots of people went to see it. Not sure what to make of it all.

EmmaH2022 · 13/08/2022 00:24

I am suspicious of reviews
Just wondered if any MNers had seen it

I'm also not great with really noisy films - I like a scary film but jump scares based on noise annoy me. (No giveaways but one particular stage show was a real pain for that!) So I wondered if the audio effects were too full on.

Seeing it tommrow..I liked Get Out and Us. Sure be some meaning behind it all. Trailer looked interesting

dutysuite · 14/08/2022 22:58

I’m seeing it tomorrow, I really liked the look of the trailer.

EmmaH2022 · 14/08/2022 23:58

So what did you guys think?

I couldn't face getting on the bus in the heat but can go later this week.

I dont know lol. I liked it! Wasn't what was expecting but was quite fun. Bit long!

EmmaH2022 · 15/08/2022 14:32

Was it very noisy and full of jump scares?

Saw it today and thought it was fantastic. Not scary but awe-inspiring and, like all Peele's films to date, deeply thought-provoking. The lead performances were outstanding; can't say more for fear of spoilers. Peele's films are invariably fresh and innovative, this is no exception.

StiggyZardust · 15/08/2022 19:34

I went to see it today. Absolutely loved it, very entertaining.

EmmaH2022 · 15/08/2022 20:03

All the reviews are vague because of spoilers.

I really hate films that are overly noisy to make a point , or stuff with jumpy camera angles, and I'm squeamish, so I like to get lots of info!

Yup! Awe inspiring is exactly the right description.

It was amazing. Huge step up from Get Out. Vast ambition, huge originality, witty subversion of so many genre tropes. The last time I was this impressed was watching Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You. It’s … life alteringly new.

I sat in the auditorium wondering how Jordan Peele and his crew and cast were doing things I’d never seen or heard before on a film screen. The way he used Daniel Kaluuya’s face, and his quality of stillness, the instrumentation and other uses of sound. Not a spoiler at all but there’s a tiny, tiny moment involving an obvious weapon that is so damn clever I cannot stop thinking about it.

However, judging from the varied reviews I think some sectors of the audience may not be positioned to fully appreciate how groundbreaking it is. For myself, I almost wept with joy that this film has been made.

I didnt find it noisey or jumpy. Wasnt many jumpy or odd camera moments either. A couple of squeamish moments but nothing major major.

GinnyJelly · 17/08/2022 21:40

I didn’t like it much, the acting is good but the lack of any relationship/emotions between the characters is odd. I never got invested in the story at all.

Fluffyfluffflufffluff · 18/08/2022 01:14

Goodness, Muddler, are you in it or something??

MuddlerInLaw · 18/08/2022 08:52

No! 😂

Just found a lot to admire. (Which I can’t expand on because … spoilers.)

billydilly · 18/08/2022 11:59

@MuddlerInLaw I agree with everything you said. I really appreciate that Peele has effectively created his own genre and that every frame is loaded with meaning. Daniel K's laconic expressions were delightful!

EmmaH2022 · 18/08/2022 14:17

Still haven't been
need some escapism so I should.

I would recommend this, v original but also v odd! At times I felt like I was watching one of those cheap 50s-60s B horror movies “ It Came From Outer Space” with cheap special effects. I agree Daniel Ks acting sublime, tho I found Emerald very annoying, but the character was probably written that way.
Memorable

LadyCampanulaTottington · 18/08/2022 14:37

We loved it. It was so different from the usual films in this genre.

I agree Daniel Kaluuya's acting was brilliant. So different from how these lead characters are usually played. Still and stoic. Keke Palmer's character was a pain in the arse. I didn't like her at all. But I guess that was the point.

It was a breath of fresh air.

powershowerforanhour · 19/08/2022 01:10

From what I can gather it looks a bit like Dean Koontz was given a decent budget to do a flashy arty remake of Tremors.

Nitgel · 23/08/2022 12:35

It's so good, very original and spooky, I will go again. I loved jean jacket, quite pretty lol and the poor chimp! Def go see

Sturmundcalm · 23/08/2022 20:07

saw with DH at the weekend - he had LOVED the trailer so was v keen to see (we'd both really liked Get Out as well).

there aren't loads of jump scares (and i would notice cause I jump easily 😂) and I don't remember it being particularly loud. really didn't love the film though... thought the acting was excellent - especially Daniel Kaluuya - and found some bits of it really interesting/different but overall just ended up a bit "meh" about it. DH liked it better than I did but agreed that he liked bits of it rather than the whole.

Agrudge · 25/08/2022 18:17

It was enjoyable. But certainly not a great film

ANiceBigCupOfTea · 27/08/2022 01:19

I liked it. I'm a fan of his movies.
His films have that strong social commentary feel, and although I know he's said since that it was in relation to surveillance culture, I felt strong animal exploitation vibes and what happens when we do this and it goes wrong.
I also enjoy a good sci-fi so all in all, I enjoyed it.
