Best war / true story films?

frodojodo · 10/03/2022 11:55

I've watched many war films, mainly ones about WW1 & WW2. (1917 is the best!!!)
However, recently I've been watching films based around Navy Seals.

Lone Survivor is one of my all time favourites!!

I haven't watched 12 Strong, 13 Hours or Hurt Locker, are they worth the watch? I know Hurt Locker is meant to be amazing but the other two have mixed reviews.

I really enjoy films based on true stories and true hero's!! Patriots Day, Deepwater Horizon, Captain Phillips, Lone Survivor, American Sniper etc.. can anyone recommend similar films?

I thought Hacksaw Ridge was very good and based on a true story.

If you don't mind subtitles - The Bombardment (Danish) is new to Netflix and. IMO, very good. Very sad and, unfortunately, did really happen.

James83 · 15/03/2022 15:06

I watched the Bombardment, Danish and The Forgotten Battle, subtitles as it is made by Netherlands Film Institute.
One theme common to both films is the pressure on an occupied population most of whom wish to carry on with their lives. But this means some kind of acceptance of the occupier. Difficult for 4 years when the continent was under a blockade so shortages of many foodstuffs and other products.
Denmark I believe was accepting of and cooperated actively with the German Forces rather more than many other countries did.
They all had to face questions that we did not.

Very dramatic films.

Black Hawk Down.
Hurt Locker is good, I thought BHD was better.

James83 · 15/03/2022 15:32

Recently watched Siege of Jabotsville.
Irish peace keepers for United Nations in Congo. They were abandoned by the UN and the incident was kept secret for about 40 years.
The best depiction of Light Infantry in operation I have seen.

Another worth finding is BAT 21. Gene Hackman and Danny Glover. Some funny moments with Danny Glover flying a helicopter for the first time in years. Based on Real life.

The Deer hunter

ISpyCobraKai · 17/03/2022 00:37

Platoon.
Full Metal Jacket.
Deerhunter.
To End All Wars (this one is little known but excellent).
Casualties of War.
Born on the fourth of July.
Windtalkers.
Acoplypse Now.
Good Morning Vietnam. (Slight relief is this, plus the soundtrack is excellent)

They're all Vietnam to get you started, I really enjoy war films, (I'm aware that sounds weird!), and South East Asia so Vietnam are generally my favourite.

We Were Soldiers (based on a book on one of the key first engagements between the Vietnamese and Americans written by Col Hal Moore called We Were Soldiers Once and Young).

Shows the battle but also the immediate effect on notifications to the wives.

I can't stand Mel Gibson but he is awesome in this.

Liverpool52 · 17/03/2022 00:47

Band of Brothers - a series but great. Finding Private Ryan also has some amazing scenes. The first 15 minutes on the beach leaves me a wreck every singke time.

Love Black Hawk Down. The book is great.

Liverpool52 · 17/03/2022 00:47

*Saving Private Ryan not finding!

ouch321 · 17/03/2022 01:12

Imitation Game - v classy film about Bletchley Park.

Dunkirk - about the evacuation

He's amazing in Gallipoli too, and very young, also a brilliant film.

I came to say exactly that! Great film. Also agree with PP about Imitation Game.
Joystir59 · 17/03/2022 01:40

Apocalypse Now
Blackhawk Down

TheFoldOx · 17/03/2022 02:33

I echo @James83's recommendation of the Siege of Jadotville - an excellent story, very well directed and acted.

I can also recommend Kajaki - a British position in Afghanistan where things go very badly wrong in an un-marked minefield. Closely based on real events, and a bit harrowing in parts.

EventuallyDelighted · 17/03/2022 04:39

Das Boot - the story of the crew of a German U boat in World War 2. Incredibly intense and emotional. I was fortunate enough to see the Director's Cut version at a cinema about 20 years ago and walked out in floods of tears even though I'd seen it at home before.

balalake · 18/03/2022 15:54

Schindler's List.

Hels20 · 19/03/2022 17:45

Gallipoli - the last scene has stayed with me for 30 years and Mel Gibson is brilliant in it.

I also second Hacksaw Ridge.

prettyteapotsplease · 19/03/2022 17:51

I thought the film about the pilot who landed the plane on the Hudson river was very good, I think it's called Sully. Even knowing the outcome didn't make it any less moving.

HopingForMyRainbowBaby · 19/03/2022 17:58

On Netflix

Schindler's list
My best friend Anne Frank
The pianist

Escape from Sobibor (I watched it on YouTube)

TwoBlondes · 19/03/2022 18:03

Black Book, a Dutch film about the Resistance

GreenClock · 19/03/2022 18:06

Some great examples here.

I’d add Carve Her Name With Pride. Also based on a true story.

Isolemnlyscare · 19/03/2022 18:24

1917
hurt locker
Black hawk down
saving private ryan,
kajaki (very harrowing i thought)
Also liked fury and unbroken.

James44 · 23/03/2022 10:42

Thanks for Das Boot suggestion. Very real for the mood.

ThelmaDinkley · 23/03/2022 10:45

Unbroken is very good. One of my favourite films is Full Metal Jacket.
