Anyone been? Saw it today and enjoyed it a lot. I hadn’t realised it was a musical despite seeing the trailer numerous times Confused
Looks great generally and Some nice dance routines and I liked most of the songs ( although no Greatest showman)
Peter Dinklage fab as is roxanne ( can’t recall actress name)
Overall if you know the story, like romance, like singing and dancing then I think you’ll like it.

Saw it today and hadn’t expected it to be a musical either!

Loved the costumes, the soundtrack. Roxanne on reflection was very selfish! Story wwell told although DP was complaining about the plot holes in the ending… how was she doing so well financially 3 years later when she started out broke?

Mumsnut · 27/02/2022 20:17

I thought it was ravishing visually, choreography and music good. But the script was leaden.

Roxanne, supposedly so in thrall to the power of language that she rejected Christian when he was unable to express himself a s’his’ letters did, suggested they marry thus: “Is that ok with you?”

pupcakes · 27/02/2022 21:45

I thought it was shockingly bad, we burst out laughing when we left the cinema! But it was good fun to watch, some of the songs were lovely although Peter's weird spoken word stuff at the beginning was terrible.

Saw it on Friday and loved it. Really liked the dancing and the scenery. And liked the songs

redfairy · 01/03/2022 00:34

I saw Cyrano tonight and throughly enjoyed it. The costumes were amazing and I loved the songs. Usually films have their dull parts but I was engaged throughout. I'd give it 8 out of 10.

ISpyCobraKai · 01/03/2022 00:35

I thought it was ok, I still cried at the end, but then I cry at everything.

pupcakes · 01/03/2022 21:25

Yeah I had a little tear but I tear at everything too!

OldTinHat · 01/03/2022 21:33

I was also surprised to discover it was a musical. I almost walked out as I can't bear musicals. But I stuck it out - and wished I'd walked out! Really didn't enjoy it at all.

Whambamthankyoumaam21 · 03/03/2022 21:55

Myself and my 12 year old watched it tonight. Not usually a fan of musicals, we both absolutely loved it. My daughter thought Roxanne was awful, she pretty much was.

rookiemere · 04/03/2022 08:15

I went last night, mostly thought it was tedious apart from the battle scenes which had some genuine emotion. The songs were awful, but I'm not a great musical fan and never would have gone had I known.

Roxanne also should surely be a great beauty, but didn't have the right level of charisma I felt for the role.

I may rewatch Roxanne over the weekend for some contrast.

valerianaofficiana · 04/03/2022 08:52

Assume its based on Cyrano de Bergerac, which I have loved since beret-wearing, irritatingly intense teen😬. Glad for the warning it's made into musical, will not soil beautiful memories ...

valerianaofficiana · 04/03/2022 08:53

It's 🤬

rookiemere · 04/03/2022 11:00

Discovered that Peter Dinklages wife wrote the screenplay

AlpineSue · 04/03/2022 11:07

It’s clearly a real marmite film because DH and I both loved it, we thought it was one of the best things we have seen in years, But it has had really mixed reviews, on MN and real life!

What have you been watching to think that was the best in years?!
beverleybass · 08/03/2022 14:39

What accent was Roxanne doing I couldn’t quite work it out?

Abracadabra12345 · 09/03/2022 13:04

I’m another one who loved it, and agree that Roxanne wasn’t well-cast. She was just a pretty woman with not an ounce of charisma. I adored Peter Dinklage in the role, and the gorgeous Christian character. I also really enjoyed the songs!

pupcakes · 09/03/2022 16:33

I've been listening to the soundtrack in the car and it's really just so lovely.

CyranoCyrano · 11/03/2022 11:33

I loved it until the bit where she married Christian. Thought the rest of the plot didn’t live up to the intensity of the start and ending was crap. Loved the songs and loved Peter Dinklage up until the marriage bit. The duke was a v weak villain too in the end - I thought Cyrano would have to kill him to protect her then go on the run or something!

ChiselandBits · 14/03/2022 19:58

I loved it, not least because it was a bit unusual and not just another action / marvel / romcom / thriller / older actors character piece etc. Plus Peter Dinklage. Just that really.

herecomesthsun · 14/03/2022 21:16

I haven't seen this film (though I did see Sinead Cusack and Derek Jacobi in Cyrano years back).

However, thinking about it, if Cyrano loves Roxanne because she is such a great beauty, then isn't he also falling prey to the superficial exaltation of looks over other qualities?

pupcakes · 19/03/2022 10:02

I think he loves her for more than just her beauty!

Curtilage · 19/03/2022 10:42

I’ve only seen as far as the scene where Cyrano speaks for Christian under the balcony, but I thought it was unexpectedly silly and incoherent, despite Peter Dinklage, whom I admire generally. It didn’t seem to use his charisma at all — I just found myself not believing in him being able to sway the audience to his side and away from Montfleury’s in the theatre scene. And the choreography is really ridiculous-looking (and I’m someone who has no issues with dance sequences in musicals) — but the Cadets de Gascogne are a macho military regiment in training, who suddenly start doing these swooning, balletic dance moves in the background that don’t seem dissimilar to the sexy bakery maids’ dance with the dough!

I think, though, it just compares very poorly to the 1990 Rappeneau/Depardieu version. (Though the character of Roxane is always perplexing — I think part of the point is that she’s a rather ordinary and superficial, though beautiful, butterfly of a woman Cyrano happens to love.)
