He wasn't just some minor scientist (in the context of the film), he was featured on the front cover of Time magazine, he was also sufficiently notable that his family were being air lifted by helicopter from NY, and the survivor he met later in the film knew his name and exactly who he was, despite never having met him previously..... He was clearly an eminent scientist of at least national repute
