Should I watch The Colour Purple?

I love the book, never seen the film though. How does the film compare? Should I watch, or will it ruin the book forever?

I saw it on IPlayer the other night and thought it was a faithful adaptation.
Heartbreaking at times, but I thought the disturbing bits from the book were well handled and not at all gratuitous.

I think the adaptation is done really well. Obviously is emotional subject matter, but think the film does show some of the depth of the book.

It is a brilliant film. And a solid adaptation from the book. It should have swept the awards it was nominated for. And Whoopi Goldberg is absolutely amazing in it, she is a truly remarkable actress.
