'Ordinary people' movies where nothing much happens?

penguinwithasuitcase · 15/12/2021 11:29

Most of my favourite movies are the slow, 'study of everyday life' type, about very ordinary people, where not a lot happens but the nothing-muchness is beautiful.

For example:

Paterson (Jim Jarmusch),
Tokyo Story,
Sideways,
Land Ho
Another Year (Mike Leigh)...

What other films of this type can you think of?

Hunting for things to add to the list that I haven't seen...

But it’s shit Grin others love it, I’ve watched it 3 times now to try and “get it” but I didn’t enjoy it and I really really wanted to as I’m a Huge TH fan.

Tiny Furniture, a Lena Dunham one fore she did Girls

Ladybird immediately came to mind - very gentle but engaging watch

Some Studio Ghibli films are like that (Totoro is a favourite)
The new Jane Austin’s Emma is beautiful.

Lost In Translation
Chungking Express
Amour

Boyhood is the ultimate slow-moving, study of everyday life film!

CheddarGorgeous · 15/12/2021 11:51

Station Agent
The Good Girl
Pauline a la Plage
Bait (not really but nothing happens for a really long time)

Ooh, some fab suggestions here - some new to me and some I'd loved and forgotten about!

I'm gearing up for a couple of weeks recovering from surgery in Jan and downloading as many movies as possible to get lost in during bedrest...

There's a film on iPlayer at the moment called Happy New Year Colin Burstead.
It's about a family getting together in a rented holiday home for NYE. Of course things do happen but it's about relationships and discordancy and nothing much at all.

This has also reminded me of the brilliant What we did on our Holiday, with Billy Connolly.

Wendy and Lucy, The Rest of Us, Private Life.

I'm normally a sci-fi or fantasy film watcher but my husband likes all sorts of genres and we watched "This Is Where I Leave You" together.

It's just a story of a family dealing with a variety of family type things but has a great cast (Jason Bateman, Adam Driver, Jane Fonda, Rose Byrne and others) and kept my attention through the whole thing.

weegiemum · 15/12/2021 14:47

Local Hero is my favourite.

musicalfrog · 15/12/2021 14:52

This Year's Love. Forgotten 90s British film.

Flockameanie · 15/12/2021 14:52

The forthcoming Joaquin Phoenix ‘Come On, Come On’ is definitely of this ilk and excellent. Also Celine Sciamma’s new one - Petite Maman.

Lynne Ramsay’s early films (Ratcatcher and Morvern Callar)

Andrea Arnold’s Fish Tank

Weekend (2011, directed by Andrew Haigh)

INeedNewShoes · 15/12/2021 14:56

This is my favourite type of film too!

French films seem to often be like this so if you don't mind subtitles that could be an avenue to explore.

Manchester by the sea
I definitely would not describe this film as 'nothing much happening' 😳
ihatethecold · 15/12/2021 21:34

Sorry @DickMabutt73962

Maybe I’m thinking about bleak! 🥴
