'Ordinary people' movies where nothing much happens?

Most of my favourite movies are the slow, 'study of everyday life' type, about very ordinary people, where not a lot happens but the nothing-muchness is beautiful.

For example:

Paterson (Jim Jarmusch),
Tokyo Story,
Sideways,
Land Ho
Another Year (Mike Leigh)...

What other films of this type can you think of?

Hunting for things to add to the list that I haven't seen...

@ihatethecold

Manchester by the sea
My god. This is the saddest film ever!

Royal Tenembaums is great. As is Garden State.

Excellent soundtracks too.

Booksmart is another suggestion. And Juno (although of course a baby happens in that one).

These are my favourite kind of films.

Land with Robin Wright

I’m still traumatised if I think about Manchester by the Sea, I wouldn’t say it falls into your category and I wouldn’t recommend it to any parents of young children unless you’re made of stronger stuff than I am

It traumatised me too. Devastating.

Friends with money. I just love this film.

45 years, on Netflix.
I watched it last night, it's brilliant.
It's a couple living an everyday life leading up to their 45th wedding anniversary except it's not, lots is discovered, but still, just everyday mundane life.
Highly recommended.

ISpyCobraKai · 25/01/2022 20:10

@nahdenmardybum

Blue Valentine.

I urge everyone to see this slow burning masterpiece of a movie. I've never seen a more accurate portrayal of a relationship going sour. It really is the most beautiful film. I've recommended it to so many but some people don't get it , saying it's "boring"

I found it fascinating though. I couldn't stop thinking about it for ages afterwards.

The film is split into two halves showing the giddy heights of all consuming new love - this is done so realistically you fall in love with them! Then it's juxtaposed years later when the cracks have set in. It jumps back and forth throughout in such a brilliantly original way.

I absolutely loved that, excellent film.

Marriage Story with Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver. I can’t remember if I liked it but it’s certainly that category.

ISpyCobraKai · 25/01/2022 22:14

@buckeejit

Totally not nothing happens but if you've not seen it, watch dancer in the dark & wait 17 minutes to see if you can get past Bjork's weird accent. It's sublime if you do.

' You've never seen Niagara falls',
'I have seen water, it's water, that's all'

That is a very weird recommendation on this thread. Lots happens, and whilst it's brilliant it's incredibly disturbing and a hard watch.
Downtherefordancing · 27/01/2022 20:24

I have read all recommendations (but I will because these are my type of films) but wanted to recommend a brilliant British film with Eddie Marsan (who I love).

The film is called Still Life and is about a man who works for the council. If people die alone in their council flat he goes through their belongings to try to find relatives or at least find out who they were.

Beautiful and heartbreaking.

Downtherefordancing · 27/01/2022 20:25

That should say .. I haven’t read all recommendation 🤦🏻

orinocosfavoritecake · 27/01/2022 20:27

Love your list. Paterson is fab.

Anything by Eric Rohmer
The last days of disco
Caro Diario
Show me lovei

Catch32 · 27/01/2022 20:32

Like Crazy starring Felicity Jones and Jennifer Lawrence

orinocosfavoritecake · 27/01/2022 20:52

Call me by your name

Manchester by the Sea is a tremendous film, but harrowing.

MadameMinimes · 29/01/2022 07:31

I don’t think it’s been mentioned yet but I’d say Never Rarely Sometimes Always falls into this category.

I’d also recommend Belfast and Boyhood.

ISpyCobraKai · 29/01/2022 10:12

I cried all the way through NRSA, bad association.
I just saw Belfast this week, brilliant film.
