Very sad about the ending 😓

Where do you think the franchise will go?

Do you really think they'll have a female lead? Or will Craig return as a reinvented other guy?!

OP posts:

@MorganSeventh

Theyll just reboot with a new actor as James Bond, I think. I don't imagine it will be any more involved than that. It's never been 'explained' in any of the previous incarnations why Bond has changed, has it?
I think this is spot on.
KittyWithStripes · 14/10/2021 14:04

And I agree with others, that they’ll cast a man (ie not a female Bond) in the role – no idea what shade of white or brown or black he will be, but I can guarantee he will be v fuckable Grin

Prequels?

Movies set between the periods of the previous films.

How Bond came to be Bond?

That would work well from a plot point of view, and get round lots of the problems of Bond's character not fitting the 21st century, but I bet you they won't do it because it would limit the product placement and advertising tie-ins.
NewspaperTaxis · 19/10/2021 12:37

Technically they could bring Daniel Craig back and de-age him using the technology so he could film Bond's adventures between Quantum of Solace, where was a novice, and Skyfall - where he was the 'old dog'.

KitchenKrisis · 21/10/2021 21:10

I just hope like forty years of bond before we simply get a new bond and it starts afresh.
Bond doesn't make sense!! Daniel Craig wasn't the bond, he was a bond.

patkinney · 07/11/2021 19:18

@Laughingravy

I'd like them to go back to the original books and period and do them as Fleming wrote them.
I've been wondering about that - and in fact where they go next in general.

I don't think they would do it set in the 50/60s - that was tried quite recently with a Man from U.N.CL.E. re-boot, which flopped. The main reason is this though: did you notice in 'No Time to Die' all the shiny Land Rovers/Range Rovers and numerous others desirable 'toys'. They get zillions for product placement, how would that work in a period setting?

Also, it might just look too much like Austin Powers!

Libertaire · 07/11/2021 19:24

My assumption is that Eon will re-boot the franchise with a new, male, British actor under 40 as Bond. Some of the core team of the Craig era films will stay for continuity, eg M, Q, Moneypenny. I also think Nomie stays as a second 00 for the new Bond to team up with.

PatriciaHolm · 08/11/2021 20:37

Judi Dench as M crossed both Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig as Bond and never mentioned the change of face ;-) so I really don't think worrying about continuity is an issue - at this point Bond should be about 80, for a start, if we were! It's always been a reboot between actors, essentially ignoring all that came before - Felix Leiter was maimed by sharks in Licence to Kill, which was completely ignored from then on, for example.

So TBH I suspect they will just start again with a new actor.

patkinney · 09/11/2021 23:28

There is a trilogy of books in the pipeline - set in the 00x universe - it is already on Amazon for a Sept 2022 release see:

www.amazon.co.uk/Double-Boo...ds=Kim+Sherwood&qid=1636403435&s=books&sr=1-1?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Screenrant calls it: "... a new trilogy of James Bond novels that will expand the 007 universe with a "feminist perspective."

I suppose that as Amazon have bought up the rights to James Bond there could be scope for an Amazon Prime TV series based on these books. Good idea?

Tragicroundabout · 11/11/2021 15:04

I doubt we'll see the regular supporting cast return. Even for Bond it would be a stretch to have Ralph Feinnes et al acknowledge his death only for a new Bond to suddenly appear and take up the reins. It would also totally diminish any of the emotional impact of No Time to Die and the story arc from the previous Daniel Craig films ( as far as Bond can have an emotional impact Smile).

I quite liked the way this one played out. Traditionally there is no real jeopardy watching Bond because you know he will survive. Now we know this isn't necessarily the case....

Get a new Bond, recast M, Q etc and away you go - you can then tell any Bond story you want.

I'm sorry, I disagree - you can only pull out this 'Bond's dead' card once.

If they bring him back - then your comment about 'no real jeopardy' becomes irrelevant, because basically he becomes a Dr Who type of super-hero with powers of re-generation. Unless we believe the theory that James Bond is a code name (like 007 is a code number) and it can get passed on - but that was messed up in Skyfall when he visited his family grave and family home....

He shouldn't have died in 'No Time to Die' and they shouldn't have killed off the Hugh Denis scientist guy either! (although it did make 'Mock the Week' funny last week as the other comedians kept going on about it)!

Oh - I heard something interesting in a Bond podcast at the weekend - it was indicated that after 'Spectre' Daniel Craig was very reluctant to do another film, he only agreed to, if his Bond died at the end. So at least if this is true, I know who to blame!

Great.

CheeseMmmm · 12/11/2021 00:53

Didn't know that! Blimey.

I think Craig is/was a great bond. He said he plays him more like the books. IE a stone cold killer. Not a man to be impressed by iyswim. (Like the old flippant womaniser etc).

I think killing him off is a good move. The franchise has too much baggage and needs to be updated etc.

I mean octopussy, all the incidents that indicate non consent eg pussy galore lesbian and what happens. Loads of stuff really.

It's time to move on and with Craig I reckon it's the best time to call it a day on a high note as it were.

CheeseMmmm · 12/11/2021 00:54

I don't want one which is clunkily woke, as it were.

And I bet they lay it on thick if they take that route which they will.

I think call it a day probably.

Rhannion · 12/11/2021 01:30

There are young James Bond books.

I think James Norton would be excellent in a reboot.

patkinney · 14/11/2021 11:26

@Laughingravy

Highly unlikely 1) there was recently an attempt at a film like that, a ‘Man From Uncle’ reboot, with Henry Cavill set in the 1960s - it failed to make much money. 2) a Bond one? well will the audience be able to get Austin Powers out of their heads!!! But mainly 3) Bond films get zillions from product placement: cars, gadgets etc. how would that work if they set it fifty or sixty years ago?
Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 16/11/2021 00:09

My (and DD's) theory is that a couple of films will feature Nomie as 007 so a female agent but not James Bond. And then a new male actor will be introduced with a whole new cast in a few years time. I don't think the producers will want to waste Lashana Lynch.

I was gutted about Felix Leiter dying, that seemed a bit harsh and final to me but I found the whole film a bit unsettling really. It was really good but I don't want to watch it again (unlike Skyfall which I can't resist whenever it's on TV). Yes it was a great send off for DC but I'm not convinced it was good for the franchise.

hevery087 · 16/11/2021 11:07

As a James Bond big fan, each movie's of them are block bluster Blush

Letsnotargue · 16/11/2021 12:27

Daniel Craig’s Bond films have had an arc of their own. The opening of Casino Royale is him gaining his 007 status - there was no explanation needed as to why many Bonds that have gone before him have already been 007. DC’s Bond died but there’s no reason they can’t do another reboot and do something different with a new Bond. That’s what I hope they do. They are good films in their own right and don’t need a convoluted explanation of how the storyline continues.

Robin233 · 21/11/2021 21:50

Watched this tonight.
The opening was great.
The music - a nod to HMSS.
It was a good film.
Thought I did get a bit confused in some parts.
Very sad ending but if Bond will return, well I guess , it can't be dead lol

Dimondsareforever · 03/01/2022 21:01

Came into the film page to see if there was a thred on this … watched it a couple of nights ago … tbh I feel completely gutted! I had no idea he would die! (Can’t believe I never saw any spoilers in the past few months!)

I get James Bond needs to modernise etc … but they can do that. Obviously you make a film in keeping with the current times.

BUT … how can they possibly continue? It will never be the same! They’ve killed off James Bond!

I suppose they will make other spy type films, all of your ideas about his daughter etc .. sound great. But they will just be another spy film. James Bond, the character, was one of a kind and the main character.

I feel quite angry about it! (In a first world problems sort of way obviously!) - how dare they kill him off? What gave them the right to do that after all these years??! (Ok yeah I get they own the rights …!!) But …. But …. But how dare they kill off James Bond!!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 04/01/2022 12:46

I don't think they can have him secretly surviving like Sherlock Holmes. Wasn't the point that he'd pass the nanobots to anybody he touched (let's not worry too much about the science!), and they'd pass it on etc etc and eventually they'd make their way around the world and kill Madeleine and their daughter?

The only way he could reappear would be if they'd both died another way. And he hadn't been allowed to kill himself in the meantime.

Personally I loved Ana de Armas's character, and the whole black tie/evening dress and guns bit.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 04/01/2022 21:57

////

Literally the only redeeming thing about it.

I've always been a Bond Fan and I hated it especially the ending. It was basically a bloody chick flick with car chases and villains. Sad

By all means write new, diverse and exciting secret agent roles. But leave Bond in all his messed up ways. He's not the ruddy Milk Tray Man.

BlueFlavour · 07/01/2022 09:27

Please god let it be Idris Elba as the new Bond. I think I’m going to pray for this.

lightisnotwhite · 07/01/2022 18:33

Of course they’ll give “ Bond” another go. I think the heavy message of the “new” and “old’ 007 lends itself to someone taking the position.
To be fair his daughter was cool so maybe she has the genes.
