I watched the trailer & thought that it looked good.
It has actually me feeling really uncomfortable and upset and I can’t seem to straighten out my thoughts. It’s just so horribly true to life in the beginning and I suppose it has triggered some awful feelings.

i thought it was excellent, and the ending was perfect.

EarringsandLipstick · 03/10/2021 07:24

Sorry it has upset you OP.

I haven't seen it, but find the trailer intriguing and would definitely like to.

FourEyesGood · 03/10/2021 17:56

Sorry it made you upset. I loved it - ‘enjoyed’ would be the wrong word, because it made me very uncomfortable, but that’s surely the intention? I thought it was really well-made and very clever, with excellent performances. The ending was so unexpected (I won’t give any spoilers).

Crimeismymiddlename · 03/10/2021 17:59

I liked it. I thought the use of men who are portrayed in other films/shows as ‘nice’ esp Sam Richardson was inspired. The bit before the end was sadly realistic, but also a great twist I did not see coming.

GoWalkabout · 03/10/2021 18:05

Yes, its unsettling because of how familiar it all is. And the deliberately chick flick vibe combined with wanting her to be ok and happy.

BeepingBB · 03/10/2021 18:34

Excellent film.

Hels20 · 03/10/2021 18:55

I thought it was excellent and Carey Mulligan brilliant. The ending I didn’t see coming but was perfect - and also realistic. The rage that the man felt.

I thought it was well done - liked that we didn’t get the full story of Nina at the beginning and that it was drip fed. Liked her confrontation of the female principal. And what she did to the other friend who had been dismissive all those years ago.

ApocalypseNowt · 03/10/2021 18:56

Great film. The actress in the leading role was spot on - fab casting.

I think some film critic made derogatory remarks about her casting (apparently she wasn't 'hot' enough & Margot Robbie would've been better). I'm glad to see they since apologised but what a stupid comment in the first place!

Whentheydontmeanwhattheysay · 03/10/2021 19:03

It was very well done. The writer/director won an Oscar.

That bit in the Dean’s office!
It was an unsettling film but it did have a great twist.

I found the ending very satisfying. But yes unsettling that these things happen but they don't usually get any retribution.

ISpyCobraKai · 04/10/2021 22:20

Where is it available?

whenwillthemadnessend · 04/10/2021 22:29

It's amazing. I thought about it for days after too

Britknee · 04/10/2021 22:31

It’s brilliant. Unsettling because it’s close to the bone. Perfectly executed.

DreadingItBadly · 05/10/2021 21:11

I kind of agree that this character had to look hotter but I loved Carey Mulligan's performance. She made the role her own.
I liked it when she first opened the door to that party and a guy who had "troublemaker-womaniser-douchebag" written on his face was standing there. He would have been an obvious suspect, wouldn't he? A classic bad guy. But no, it actually a nice guy, his friend, who would have never ever raised a suspicion that he can be capable of such a horrible thing.
Being a mother, I couldn't feel sorry for her parents that she didn't trust them enough to say what was going on and they had no idea and couldn't help her. I didn't like it that she quite university "to help her friend" - that was her future broken too.
But all in all, a really clever and moving film which I want my own DD to watch.

DreadingItBadly · 05/10/2021 21:12

*couldn't help feeling sorry for her parents

nameswap48 · 05/10/2021 21:31

I kind of agree that this character had to look hotter

How can you possibly think that? For one thing, she is plenty attractive, but more importantly, the leches she was attracting were after her because she was weak and drunk, that was the whole point.

Well, I do think that - that's how.

The leeches would go after her because she is a) female b) blonde c) slim d) drunk.

She is very attractive but not the kind which would be natural for this role. The Margo Robbins type would indeed be the right type. Doesn't mean that Carey Mulligan wasn't fantastic.

nameswap48 · 06/10/2021 07:20

@DreadingItBadly bullshit. You think brunettes aren't targeted? Do you think you have to look like Margot Robbie to be sexually assaulted? I assure you, you don't. I don't think you realise how sexist you're being with those thoughts. Whilst she isn't as traditionally "movie beautiful" as Margot Robbie, as all women are targeted daily, you can without doubt put drunk in front of blonde, and scrap blonde altogether.

MiddleClassProblem · 06/10/2021 07:28

@DreadingItBadly actually it’s a problem for women no matter how attractive you rate them. You can be overweight, spotty, unwashed hair, any hair colour. Hell, to be a target of raped you can even be elderly and some men will still just see you as a walking hole. That’s the sad truth.

Having the narrative that it would only happen to hot girls is unrealistic and it’s gives a falsehood to the problem.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 06/10/2021 07:30

I hardly think someone prepared to rape a drunk woman would back off once he realised she wasn't drunk. She was putting herself at extreme risk there especially as she was not in a place where help was coming soon.

nameswap48 · 06/10/2021 07:36

I disagree. I think a lot of men who do this don't see themselves as "rapists", nor do a lot of people generally, sadly. Hence putting the blame on women, and consent (whilst drinking especially) being so misunderstood. I'm not saying it's without risk, but I think you're misunderstanding the film if you think she happened to lure only sadist rapists.

names lighten up, OK? All I said is that Carey Mulligan in that role was not traditionally hot for the purpose of the character and you agreed with me. I do know that women are targeted daily, being one, so if you want to turn it into a discussion of assaults aimed at women you have picked the wrong audience.

DreadingItBadly · 06/10/2021 08:25

"middle" I agree to an extent, but I think that a hot, drunk and visually helpless woman in a bar would be a more likely target than "overweight, spotty, unwashed hair". If nothing else, than for the sick reason that men use of "well, she was obviously up to having fun being dressed like that".

And she was picking up men in bars, not walking in dark alleys.

TheMarzipanDildo · 06/10/2021 08:31

But Carey mulligan is stunning!

Newgirls · 06/10/2021 08:36

It is unsettling. I hope lots of men watch it.
