Every time I am reminded that this man is dead it is sad.
I thought he was fantastic in S&S, although can’t say the same for Hugh Grant 😲
And he was hilarious in Robin Hood.
A great actor, sadly missed.

truly madly deeply is lovely and it won't have you crying at all

Just thinking about this, and all his other performances....... oh fuck, what's this in my eye...

PineappleCakes · 16/08/2021 14:11

Oh I've always loved Alan Rickman, so beautiful, such a lovely voice, great actor. And apparently he was a really decent lovely person too.

For those who have yet to watch Madly Truly Deeply, you're in for a treat! I don't remember Close My Eyes, although I know I watched it years ago. I also enjoyed watching him in Snow Cake and A Little Chaos (which he directed).

I saw him a few times on stage, he was amazing, breathtakingly amazing.

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 16/08/2021 14:43

I didn’t get that obnoxious meathead Bruce Willis / John McClane was supposed to be the hero, not witty, charismatic Alan / Hans Gruber
I was quite surprised to discover that Die Hard was Alan Rickman’s first cinema role in 1988.
His voice was just wonderful. If ever you found yourself in a crisis, you’d want Alan Rickman, and that commanding voice, in charge! Going to watch A Little Chaos again today, after being reminded of it. Eye in the Sky is also worth another watch.

Vaselike · 16/08/2021 14:49

Truly Madly Deeply is great. But: bring tissues.

TalesOfDrunkennessAndCruelty · 16/08/2021 14:49

Some MN gardening chums and I went to a preview of A Little Chaos. If I recall correctly, he did a Q&A afterwards. Is it on Netflix? I shall look for it.

superoz · 16/08/2021 14:55

OMG I’ve never seen that Texas video, thanks for bringing it to my attention!

newnortherner111 · 16/08/2021 19:40

A wonderful actor with a voice you never forget, and a man who died far too young.

SirSamuelVimes · 16/08/2021 19:52

Ooh I bloody love that Texas video.

He did another one with them not long before he died, and he spoke / sang in the song too. His voice was like melted velvet.

I'm always sad when I remember he has died. Watching Harry Potter films these days is increasingly sad, actually - so many of the actors have died now.

Lumpwoody · 16/08/2021 19:57

He was wonderful.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 16/08/2021 19:59

He was very, very funny in Galaxy Quest. Greatly missed.

minipie · 16/08/2021 20:02

Oh his VOICE. Like honeycomb. Or something.

DameAlyson · 16/08/2021 20:04

His first big role - or the first time I became aware of him - was as Mr Slope in the BBC's adaptation of the Barchester Chronicles back in the '80s. He was perfect for the role, as he was perfect for Snape.

Looks as if the series might be available on YouTube.

ChequerBoard · 16/08/2021 20:12

@tintodeverano2

Have you seen truly madly deeply? Excellent film.

Yes. Amazing film but absolutely bloody heartbreakingly sad.

Watched it with DH after he'd had a rather serious diagnosis and we weren't sure how long he had to live. I've never snotted and cried so much in my life. Don't think I could watch it again, too traumatic.

(And DH is still with us, 26 years later)

itsgettingwierd · 16/08/2021 20:21

@cutebutscary

I watched half blood Prince with hubby last night and said exactly that, I'm never normally bothered with these things but he just seemed like such a truly lovely man and love everything I've seen him in . He's just had a uniqueness about him don't you think?
Same here.

He was such a brilliant character in it and I also found him hilarious in Robin Hood.

gavisconismyfriend · 16/08/2021 20:24

Truly, madly, deeply - my favourite film ever

TalesOfDrunkennessAndCruelty · 18/08/2021 14:53

Discovering Alan Rickman is on Sky Arts right now, and reminding me of several of his films I've missed.

DominicRaabsTravelAgent · 29/08/2021 20:16

I watched Truly, Madly, Deeply last tile it was on TV. Thought it can't be as sad as I remember. Still blarted after all these years.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 29/08/2021 20:18

Try Close My Eyes if you've not seen it, unusual film but he's great in it

Absolutely love that film.

He was an amazing actor.

NoYOUbekind · 29/08/2021 20:22

Me too and actually it's even sadder now because when I was a callow youth I was absolutely determined not to have kids, so somehow I missed just how much Nina's character arc was to do with children. Watching it again 20 odd years later as a mother... It actually ended me. It was actually wonderful to be able to find a whole new layer of meaning in a film that I knew off by heart back in the day. But proper sobs.
BelindaBumcrack · 29/08/2021 20:37

I was lucky enough to meet him many years ago when I working in the theatre - 1995 I think. And he introduced himself to me. As if I didn't know who he was! But he didn't have an ounce of self importance or fame or anything like that.

He was utterly fabulous, the nicest bloke; friendly, chatty and just bloody lovely. And his voice, that amazing voice, just lovely to hear him talking to you. I will never, ever forget it. What a bloody loss. I was hearbroken to hear that he had died.

southeastdweller · 30/08/2021 20:43

He was consistently good, can't say that about many actors.

Has anyone seen An Awfully Big Adventure? That has one of his most underrated performances and the film has such a sad ending.

Disfordarkchocolate · 30/08/2021 20:45

I feel sad when I remember he has died too. He was a fantastic actor and incredibly sexy. I go and find the video he was in for Texas right now.

bendmeoverbackwards · 20/09/2021 07:19

Loved him in Victoria Wood’s All Day Breakfast

‘Alan Dickman’ 😂

DateLoaf · 20/09/2021 07:33

He was so brilliantly great as an actor that makes me really happy to know that in real life he was a genuinely nice person too. He’s much missed on the big screen.

Giggorata · 20/09/2021 08:28

Another one still mourning this lovely man.

I went to see him in Hamlet, driving miles in pouring rain in a leaking car of uncertain temperament and with agonising period pains.
Once he came on, after the audible indrawn breaths of every woman in the audience, I forgot that I was damp and in pain. He was so sombre and so sexy - and that voice…
