A lovely, low-budget film, filmed almost entirely in India. With Owen Wilson (from Starsky and Hutch - the blonde one), Bill Murray, Anjelica Houston. Three brothers on a "spiritual journey" in search of their absent mother. Anyone who has been to India will love it especially. It 'smells' of India, the chaos, the formal stricutures, the trains, the landscape, the people, from time to time, the vibrant colours, peeling paint - you know you're not in Kansas any more!
The brothers, or at least a mix of them, are on camera for about 90% of the time - a hugh demand. There's no 'clever' camera work, or CGIs - just a twisting story, great acting (imho).

A bit 'arthouse' for some taste probably, and not likely to be on gen. release, but a lovely film if you like something quirky and entertaining.

My type of film, seen clips on Film 2007.
As an aside, didn't Owen Wilson try and kill himself recently?

southeastastra · 24/11/2007 14:40

yes fancy seeing this

Pan · 24/11/2007 14:48

yes, it seems he did Gingerbear..not sure if it was before/after making this film. Another good thing was for a film set in India designed for a western audience, there was no stereo-typing going on...just an authentic "train movie", travelling through that beautiful country.
Didn't see Film 07, but hope they were good to it.

Yes, came with glowing praise from JR

Gingerbear · 24/11/2007 14:52

Adrien Brody in it too.
I like him. Good actor.

Pan · 24/11/2007 14:57

ah, yes, one of the brothers.
And no 'tourists' sights whatsoever.

There's also something in it for people who like the Peter Sarstedt record "Where do you go to my lovely" even.....

It's a Wes Anderson film - I heart him - Royal Tenenbaums perhaps my fvourite film.
It got a bad review from Peter Bradshaw in the Guardian, which is always a good reason to go and see a film, because he's a twit.

I loved it too - Adrien Brody very good, and Owen Wilson, especially after the whole suicide attempt thing, made his performance more poignant. Angelica Huston and Bill Murray great too (as always), and of course the Marc Jacobs luggage was the star of the show! Not really sure about Jason Schwartzman tbh, he's sort of blank, but DH was drooling over Natalie Portman...

I wonder if it really was very low budget - it is very lush, beautiful cinematography, fantastic attention to detail, lots of big names involved. I imagine a fair amount of money was spent on it!

Wes Anderson is fab - I really enjoyed the Life Aquatic, although that generally got bad reviews, and the Royal Tenenbaums is a favourite. Must dig out Rushmore and Bottle Rocket and watch again.
