I saw this today. Loved it. Great music and dance numbers. Loved the characters and stories. Very enjoyable.

Oh I can't wait to see it! Probably won't be going for awhile though. Was it on a par with The Greatest Showman by any chance?

CampingFabulous · 19/06/2021 22:45

I absolutely loved it - it made me smile all day. Going again on Monday 😊

MarcelineMissouri · 19/06/2021 22:49

I am going on Monday to see this. It looks great!

sashagabadon · 20/06/2021 20:26

I enjoyed it but I liked the greatest showman more. The songs are better IMO.
It sounded a bit too Hamilton for me. Or maybe Hamilton is a bit too in the heights?!
It was also a little long but I liked the big dance prices particularly the one set in the pool.
The lead is good

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 20/06/2021 20:28

Is it suitable for an almost 11 yr old? (one who's still quite innocent)

sashagabadon · 20/06/2021 20:32

Yes 11 is fine in terms of a bit of kissing/ romance but nothing x rated but might be too long? 2.5 hours. My son was bored but then he is not really a singing/ dancing/ musical fan. There was a group of year 7’s (according to my son) sitting near us and they were not very engaged and kept going to the loo Confused

Meredusoleil · 20/06/2021 20:40

Good question! I'm thinking of taking my 9 and 12 year olds. But then they love musicals like TGS and Mamma Mia and should Be able to sit through 2.5 hours I think.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 20/06/2021 21:49

Thanks I think she'll be well able for the length of it, just wanted to check content! I'm looking forward to going to the cinema again Smile

secretfreckle · 22/06/2021 22:58

'Greatest Showman' was a lot better, but I enjoyed it more than 'Hamilton'. It seemed quite long though.

There is one definite bit in IN the Heights that LMM used again for Hamilton, a piano motif which is identical.

We cancelled our trip to see it due to dd and dh having to isolate. As dd is trying to limit socialising until after her college graduate showcase we are going in 2 weeks time. I can't wait.

Ds went last night and loved it.

Comefromaway · 24/06/2021 15:10

Did you stay for the end credits? Ds said he and his girlfriend were the only ones who stayed!

Figgygal · 25/06/2021 08:50

I am also tempted to take 9yo ds he loves musicals
I love Hamilton so won’t mind it any similarities

Butterfly44 · 26/06/2021 23:31

I'm an avid Hamilton fan so looked forward to seeing it. Unfortunately disappointed. Yes similarities in rap/songs but agree with previous posters. Too long, boring, not engaging enough. Lots of talking in Spanish, not much of a storyline. It's not done too well in the box office as they hoped. Just can't beat Hamilton.

bendmeoverbackwards · 02/07/2021 21:36

Glad to see positive reviews. My DDs want me to see it with them but I hate long films!

EmmaStone · 04/07/2021 19:22

Just back from watching it. I hate TGS, never managed to get through the whole thing. I liked the novelty of Hamilton, but not the devotion to it. I quite enjoyed this, for me it was better than Hamilton, but I loved the ode to NYC really, I love things actually filmed there. Too long though, although the actors were lovely to watch, the lead has a lovely face.

Ironoaks · 08/07/2021 23:26

I went to see it today with DS, who has liked the songs from In the Heights for years now.

Lyrically and musically, you can see how much LMM progressed in the 7 or 8 years between In the Heights and Hamilton, which is much more polished.

However, this had a freshness to it that I liked; when LMM wrote these songs, he was a similar age to the main character.

I also found the story more moving than Hamilton, and the characters more sympathetic.

This is an excellent summary.

It's no 'Greatest Showman'.

It was pleasant enough - not feeling any urge to watch it again. No particularly memorable songs but the dancing was superb. Absolutely excellent - both the choreography and the execution.

It was a nice enough way to spend an evening but I'm not going out of my way to suggest it to other people.

KeepScrapingBy · 09/07/2021 14:17

Loved it too, and the music has stayed with me. Thought the Spanish made it more authentic. But then I love musicals, can’t wait for the new West Side Story and Dear Evan Hanson.
