How gruesome is it? Really want to watch it but I really don't like gratuitous violence

It’s brilliant but there are some very graphic scenes. They are relatively short and spaced out though.

Rollergirl11 · 20/12/2020 18:07

How weird, DD has taken it upon herself to watch again today. I’d forgotten just how odd it is! There are a few bits that I literally couldn’t watch and I’m a seasoned horror fan. But it is truly spectacular.

ThatchersGapingVag · 20/12/2020 18:42

It's my favourite film to come out of the last 5 years. The first half hour is the most traumatic I think. Absolutely gobsmackingly amazing film.

KyraGoose · 20/12/2020 18:52

Odd, freaky, gory in places.

HappyInL0nd0n · 20/12/2020 18:58

Loved it.

MaMaLa321 · 21/12/2020 15:39

sorry not watched it. Was all set to until I read the review where it describes how people were thrown off a cliff and finished off with hammers. I mean, what! Surely no film can be good enough to make it worth sitting through that?

It's not as simple as that, it's a really great scene. They're not thrown off a cliff.

You should watch it.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 21/12/2020 16:33

I wouldn't class it as gory.

I really enoyed it.

Cokearama · 21/12/2020 16:35

There are some gory bits, but only for a matter of seconds.

It's a brilliant film though.

shellshock77 · 21/12/2020 16:56

There are some graphic scenes. But it was so disappointing. It's just all been done before.
I want to find a horror film that is actually scary, but I think it's impossible now.

peppermintteadrinker · 21/12/2020 17:00

I think it depends what kind of horror you like. No way do I like anything gory like Saw or anything, but I loved midsommer. It is shocking but also I found it cathartic (but I was in midst of break up in lockdown 1! I'm weird. I go dark when I want to feel better)

ApocalypseNowt · 21/12/2020 17:05

Not my usual genre of horror but I thought it was very effective. The bright daylight and cadence of the film made me feel like I was tripping too!

Minimal gore really and only shown briefly.

I also thought the main actress (can't remember her name) was excellent.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 21/12/2020 17:06

I really liked it. I did actually cover my eyes during the hammer bits, but mainly because I was afraid one of the characters would vomit. I was disappointed in the film though; the first half was so good, but the second just sort of ran out of steam, I thought. I would have appreciated more information about the cult's beliefs. And they were a bit stingy with the character development.

I really enjoyed the visual style generally, it was beautiful.

Seafog · 21/12/2020 17:07

It is brilliant, peppered with occasional omg moments, but it is used effectively

Lol! It's really not for you.
ContessaDiPulpo · 21/12/2020 17:09

I found it wonderful. Weirdly, in terms of support during grief, I completely understood the lead character's final decision.

MrsMiaWallis · 21/12/2020 17:10

"Minimal gore"

Someone gets their hwad smashed in very graohically and Someone else is suspended alive by their lungs

Good film though

ApocalypseNowt · 21/12/2020 17:17

Sorry I meant minimal gore for horror films in general. Most of the gore in midsommer is fairly brief and/or out of focus.

GreenlandTheMovie · 02/01/2021 10:24

I thought it was great, there's just so much in it and so many themes being explored.

The cult's beliefs weren't really explained, but that created an sura of apartness and helped justify the brutal acts in some way as there was no attempt at logical explanation.

bluetongue · 09/01/2021 04:29

I loved it. Very unsettling and trippy.

There were a few parts I watched through my fingers (I knew nothing nothing about it beforehand apart from Americans in Sweden) but it’s well worth it.

Regretsy · 09/01/2021 05:01

Ari aster has said it’s not supposed to be a horror film but was marketed as such because of his previous film hereditary (which was pretty scary I think). It’s supposed to be more unsettling. I went to watch it with my brother and we were pretty disappointed. I’d recommend if you’ve ever been cheated on and felt like revenge!

GreenlandTheMovie · 09/01/2021 18:21

One of my favourite parts was where the two sacrifices who were cult members and had volunteered to die in a building set deliberatley on fire and fell for the lie that they wold feel no pain, turned to each other and said it hurt before they started screaming...

Very dismissive of cults in that short scene.

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 09/01/2021 18:26

Very creepy and atmospheric and compelling in a Wicker Man-esque way. It's good. Amazing visuals, some gruesome. It is a kind of quiet horror, no jump scares.

I'd agree ... take those scenes out and the character development and story were quite thin. I was disappointed. Although I do think the daylight/no night is a great way to play with senses and the feeling of disorientation you'd feel.

Best new horror I've seen in a while is Us. That played on my mind for days after. The lead actress is amazing in it.

StacySoloman · 09/01/2021 18:29

I really enjoyed it but did think it was pretty gory!

I like horror movies but usually avoid any gore.
