Uplifting foreign films?

My mum only really likes foreign films, but I always seem to end up buying her ones that turn out pretty depressing! The biggest hit was 'Le Petit Nicolas' which she thought was hilarious, but she wasn't so keen on the sequel. Can anyone recommend something along those lines? French or German would be ideal, but Italian is OK if there are subtitles. She loves animals and prefers 'nice' films, without much violence and nothing too raunchy.

Blind date - french film on Netflix. Wonderfully light and quite funny too Smile

Life is Beautiful is Italian and with an uplifting message however it’s a Nazi theme.

Nine Queens - it’s about con artists - not a comedy but very entertaining and not depressing (IMO)

Chocolat - one of the most uplifting films ever.
Amelie
Manon Des Sources
Jean de Florette
Le Chateau de Ma Mere

Cinema Paradiso (Italian)
Barbara (German) - think it's uplifting. Definitely brilliant.

'Pocket money' is a good old sentimental one about little kids. 'Les Chorists' was heartwarming too I think (not old). I love 'together' by Lukas moodysson which is Swedish and really funny and uplifting but has a bit of (not explicit) gay sex and wanking in it so might not be a winner!

Les Choristes was beautiful

Can't think of any animal or family ones but two spring to mind if she's ok with romance.
The Lunchbox is absolutely lovely - romantic in an old-fashioned way, completely non-raunchy, with middle-aged characters. It's Indian.
Another sweet one is Shall We Dance, which is Japanese (NOT the Richard Gere remake). Again, older characters and nothing raunchy. They're both about finding happiness and fulfilment in later life.

And what about Il Postino, which was such a big, heartwarming hit in the mid-90s if she hasn't seen that? Postman strikes up friendship with famous poet on beautiful Italian island.

Les Émotifs Anonymes is both funny and touching, and has a happy ending!

Priceless
My Best Friend
Apres Vous(The beginning isn't exactly heartwarming but it's a comedy and the ending is uplifting)
The Closet
Romuald et Juliette

@labobo - Jean De Florette isn’t uplifting! It’s a tragedy, as is Manon des Sources. Beautiful films, but definitely not happy...

Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources are not exactly a bundle of laughs!Shock

Populaire is good too - a lighthearted romance.

nitgel · 25/11/2020 23:33

I also watched the French version of My Father the Hero which is funny

Anything with Jaques Tati - my favourite is Mon Oncle but Mr Hulot's Holiday is great too

Les Visiteurs with Jean Reno

The triplets of Belleville

nitgel · 25/11/2020 23:34

Can't say I've seen loads of uplifting German films but Goodbye Lenin is really very funny: a dutiful son tries to conceal the fall of the Berlin Wall from his very communist mother because it would upset her.
