30mins in and bored (and a little disturbed)

I was so looking forward to it too Sad

We’re watching this too! I’ve said twice already I am not enjoying this but DP wants to press on. So I’m on here :-)

What the fuck was that with the dog?

RunningFromInsanity · 19/09/2020 20:56

Everyone is crazy in this film Confused

The dog part was disturbed.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but I'm two hours in and I'm scrolling Mumsnet now 😴

The accents are making me laugh though

Couldn’t take Dudley Dursley seriously with that accent. Although I do think he has matured into a really decent actor.

Lemonylemony · 19/09/2020 21:51

This really is dull. All the men are violent/abusive and all the women are walking cliché stereotypes with no story of their own. What is the actual point of it?

RunningFromInsanity · 19/09/2020 21:59

And then everybody dies.

Still got 40mins left Sad

Read the book in preparation for the film coming out

Haven't bothered as a result Grin

We’ve given up. Life is too short. Especially if you are from wherever that film is set, apparently.

16mins to go and the dead dog is back...

So what was your conclusion @RunningFromInsanity? Was there a payoff for all the tedium by the end?

I think the problem for me was there was very little development of any of the characters - mostly I guess due to the need to kill most of them off quickly - so I didn’t know them or care about anyone, or find any of their actions particularly interesting or shocking, apart from what Bill Skarsgärd did to that poor dog.

That and despite it being billed as an “ensemble” film, the women not having their own stories, they were all just stereotypes written to serve the mens’ stories. I pointed this out to DP and his response was “well, it is the 60s”. I threw a pillow at him. Inspired by the violence on screen clearly.

RunningFromInsanity · 20/09/2020 12:08

My conclusion is it was a crock of shit.
Absolutely ridiculous and one of the most boring movies.

How people can say it is was deep/intense/gritty/well acted is beyond me.

It was basically a load of famous actors with laughable southern accents, who only got 10seconds of screen time each where they did something shitty and then they died.

The end.

And speaking of the end- Predictable and eye rolling.

0/10.

Our review: depressing dirge, totally humourless and strangely one-dimensional characters - didn't care about any of them. I want my 2 1/2 hours back!

RunningFromInsanity · 20/09/2020 23:13

didn't care about any of them I think that sums it up.
Within 30 minutes you realise each character is going to die pretty quickly so you give up trying to get invested in them.

I would be embarrassed if I were Tom Holland/Robert Pattinson/Seb Stan etc to have been in such a plotless waste of time.

I definitely need help, because I really enjoyed it. I do have a soft spot for a good comeuppance though.

HarryleQuebecois · 06/10/2020 02:12

I thought it was really good.

Out of interest, what sort of films do you like? Maybe it’s just not your thing? Did you like other sort of slow films, like There Will Be Blood?

Doingtheboxerbeat · 07/10/2020 23:40

I pretty much assume that if a film has millions of warnings for the viewers at the beginning ,then that's the film for me Grin.

AlyssaJ12 · 27/10/2020 10:01

The movie is so gloomy and dark, but I really enjoyed watching it!

DangerMouse17 · 27/10/2020 10:08

I enjoyed it, along with the accents! Blush

Oblomov22 · 16/07/2022 20:49

Watching it now. Enjoyed it.
