Dd2 and I really enjoyed the new Disney Mulan tonight.

The original Mulan is DD1's fav Disney film but she stopped watching this new version about 20 min in. She muttered something about no comedy and no dragon and went off refusing to watch anymore.

I've not watched the whole original Mulan so can't compare.

It's quite dark and violent - essentially a war film. Lots of fighting but absolutely no blood so in that sense it's very Disney.

It looks like it tilts a bit too far in the direction of CCP propaganda for me to be comfortable watching this. I know that the Hong Kong protesters have asked people to boycott.

yeah ok! Hmm

its the 2nd Disney film directed by a women, largest budget film ever directed by a woman, has a strong feminist theme and character and is based on an old Chinese legend.

I can't see the CCP having much of a hand in it. Don't worry you won't be brainwashed watching it.

Yeah, I was reading this, apparently lots of Asian countries want it banned. According to them the main actress has been very vocal about lots of things and it’s not going down well.

The reports of Mulan filming in Xinjiang, in areas where Uighur people are being held in concentration camps and suffering really terrible human rights violations are too bad to be ignored. Disney actively thanks the authorities there in the credits. As much as I love the original animation I can’t in good conscience watch this version.

We watched it before I'd read any of the reasons not to, and I probably wouldn't have paid for it if I had. I loved it. Never really watched the original so I didn't have much to compare it with.

Same. Also loved it. Easily the best live action remake Disney have done, I think.

dododotheconga · 09/09/2020 06:48

I also watched it before I heard about the concerns but I thought it was rubbish! I actually couldn't believe it was a Disney film. Very weak acting, some really strange camera moments. I loved the original version but this was poor by comparison in my opinion.

WisestIsShe · 09/09/2020 13:45

@dododotheconga I always think of you love the original the remake is rubbish! Will Smith in Aladdin? No thanks.Grin

We are all huge Disney Animation fans and we have not seen a live-action film of an original that what any good. In our opinion. Worst one was Lady and the Tramp. I think we might give Mulan a very wide berth.

I don't understand the relevance of anything that you have said. The fact that the director has a vagina does not in any way negate the fact that the film has been developed in part as an apology for a genocidal regime.

I can't see the CCP having much of a hand in it. Don't worry you won't be brainwashed watching it.

Are you a CCP bot, or just completely insane? The Chinese government tightly controls all media within China. They have a track record of heavily censoring and controlling foreign media shown in China esp films. The idea that they will not have had a massive influence on a film which is about Chinese history is laughable.

I don't think I'm in any danger of being brainwashed by it because if I somehow accidentally wound up seeing it I think I'd be too nauseated by the thought that it was filmed near the Chinese government's concentration camps for ethnic minorities.

I liked that movie

picklecustard · 02/10/2020 12:22

The original Mulan is one of my fave Disney films and I’ve avoided this one because no songs and no mushu and just generally seems like it’s an entirely different film. Id love a live action remake true to the animated version Blush
