I can't quite get my head around a film about Hitler being funny!

Furrybootsyecomfy · 02/01/2020 13:34

So looking forward to this- love Taika Watiti.

bruffin · 02/01/2020 13:36

I havent yet but Adult DS has seen it twice and DH also really enjoyed the film.

OddBoots · 02/01/2020 13:38

My (grown) DC are seeing it tomorrow with their friends, hopefully they will enjoy it.

iklboo · 02/01/2020 13:40

It's not really about Adolf Hitler - it's a 10 year old boy in Nazi Germany at the end of WW2.

Oh I see! I had seen some stills and though ‘that’s a bit weird!’.

JoyceDivision · 02/01/2020 13:55

It is brilliant!

We took DC to see it last night, funny, heartbreaking, redemptive... Loved how as the film progressed the imaginary friend of Hitler became darker, furious and losing his grip.

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 02/01/2020 13:58

Really looking forward to this so glad to hear the positive reviews

3rdNamechange · 02/01/2020 14:08

Loved it !

iklboo · 02/01/2020 17:32

We also love Boy, Hunt for the Wilderpeople and What We Do In The Shadows by Taika Waititi.

We went yesterday (me, DH and adult ds) and we all.thought it was brilliant. I had been a bit nervous about it given the subject matter, but the Hitler in the film is not a realistic portrayal of Hitler but Hitler as imagined by a 10 year old boy who i a member of Hitler Youth.

It was both very funny and very moving. I cried a lot but also laughed loads.

It has some quite brutal.scenes in it so I was surprised it got a 12 rating so wouldn't necessarily take a younger child to see it.

CormoranStrike · 02/01/2020 19:56

Utterly brilliant! I am going again.

It’s funny in all the right places and heartbreakingly sad in others.

NotSorry · 02/01/2020 22:30

We saw it yesterday - we all loved it - we had seen the trailers so we were aware of how Hitler is portrayed

ouch321 · 02/01/2020 22:33

I read about this on the BBC news app today and was tempted to see it.

Glad it's good.

VanillaSugarr · 02/01/2020 22:37

Can you please tell me what the brutal scenes are? I want to take DS to see it and he is 12 (and he loves What We Do In the Shadows but we have to pre-watch it so that we know when to fast forward through the rather risqué bits).

Crunched · 02/01/2020 22:38

I loved it as well. Can anyone remember the poem/poet at the very end. I wanted to read it again if possible.

JoyceDivision · 02/01/2020 22:44

Vanilla there's nothing in the film too brutal, if your 12 year old has seen ...Shadows them they will be fine with Jo Jo

JoyceDivision · 02/01/2020 22:45

If you want I can pm you scenes so no spoilers on thread for anyone

CormoranStrike · 02/01/2020 23:02

I think the poet was Rilke

CormoranStrike · 02/01/2020 23:03

Yup

QUOTE AT THE END OF JOJO RABBIT

The quote used at the end of Jojo Rabbit is:

“Let everything happen to you

Beauty and terror

Just keep going

No feeling is final.”

VanillaSugarr · 02/01/2020 23:19

Bless, thank you but I’ll take your word for it that it will be OK. If he’s upset by anything then we can talk it through.

Can’t wait to see it!

Palegreenstars · 02/01/2020 23:21

Just seen this and loved it.Johanssen was marvellous.

I did think there were a lot of similarities to Moonrise Kingdom by another director. Also, ever character in everything he does talks like him which would annoy me if I saw them to close together.

On balance I preferred Hunt for the Wilderpeople but still an excellent addition.

Crunched · 02/01/2020 23:28

Thanks CormoranStrike.

puptent · 02/01/2020 23:35

I did really like it. I thought it was going to be a bit basic and linear when it started but it really gets going and has a lot of depth. I thought Hitler was funny and because he was the imaginary friend of a young boy who was looking for stability in a life full of horrible uncertainty I think the film gets away with making him such a comic character.

There were a few kids watching (12-ish) and they were quite fidgety. I think they were bored in parts.

It's quite nuanced for a film with a comedy Hitler in (and there are very stark and sad bits too. You see people shot and also hanging. Sorry if that sounds brutal but just a warning for those with younger folk).

iklboo · 03/01/2020 13:10

We're going to watch Eagle vs Shark tonight. I think DH & I watched it years ago but wine may have been consumed.
