Went to see this yesterday and bloody loved it. Funny, heartwarming and heartbreaking. Has anyone else been?

It's on my watch list, I'm really intrigued by it. A comedy about Nazis, sounds odd.

iklboo · 03/01/2020 13:16

@Redcrayons - it's more a relationship piece with Nazis in it. Smile

We're going to see it tomorrow. It looks good, though it got a mixed review on Front Row (presenter loved it, film critic didn't).

MadisonAvenue · 03/01/2020 13:45

We're seeing it next week, the trailer has been shown each time we've been to the cinema recently and we're both really looking forward to seeing it.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 03/01/2020 17:37

@VanillaSugar I think a 12 year old would probably be fine, I meant I wouldn't necessarily take a younger child. Do take tissues though. I couldn't stop crying at the end

imip · 03/01/2020 17:39

My 13 year old saw it today and loved it. She’s just finished reading the book. I’m desperate to see it, as are my 11yo and 9yo. I’ve said no, unfortunately. Common sense media have a good synopsis for children.

Flurgle · 03/01/2020 22:22

Loved it. I think it probably should have been a 15, as it was brutal in parts. The acting was fantastic and it made me laugh a lot but also was very dark towards the end.

VivaLeBeaver · 03/01/2020 22:26

Hunt For The Wilderpeople was hilarious, Hadn’t realised this was the same director. Just saw a clip and it looks good.

imip · 04/01/2020 07:24

I’ve just recorded hunt for the wilder people, it was in TV last week. He has other movies out. Im

KTD27 · 04/01/2020 07:33

God I’m such a dissenting voice but I just didn’t like it. Whatever the magic sauce is it didn’t have it for me. Fully appreciate I’m the only person who thinks so. DH LOVED it. It’s been reviewed and received really well. Must have been an off day for me Grin

EmmaGrundyForPM · 04/01/2020 08:03

@KTD27. Peter Bradshaw (film critic st The Guardian) also hated it so you're not alone! i almost didn't go after I'd read his review. I loved it in the end but I think it trod a very fine line and I can see why some people might feel that it fell the wrong side of that line

iklboo · 04/01/2020 10:27

@KTD27 - it's perfectly fine you didn't like it. It'd be boring if everyone was the same Grin. Was there one particular thing or just the feel of it overall?

@iklboo I am not at all sure. I think maybe it’s because I knew what happened. I’d accidentally read spoiler on twitter and then it just felt odd watching it - I couldn’t get as invested or as ‘taken away’ as I would have done otherwise. So just disengaged. I can absolutely see the performances and the staging etc were gorgeous. Love taika whatiti aswell. It just felt a bit flat to me.

iklboo · 04/01/2020 11:11

Ah Ok. That'll probably do it. Smile

We watched Eagle vs Shark last night. Very different feel to Boy and Wilderpeople. Still enjoyed it, just not quite as much.

We’ve just come back - I forgot to tell my History student DD that Hitler was his imaginary friend so she was a bit confused for the first 10 minutes. DS was fine but I was a wreck halfway through. Beautiful film. I hope it gets the recognition it deserves.

MillicentMartha · 04/01/2020 23:14

I went with DS2 and 3, 17 and 20. We all loved it. Lots of laughter and yet such a serious story. I thought the two child leads were brilliant as was Scarlett Johansson. I want to see Hunt for the Wilderpeople now!

FenellaVelour · 05/01/2020 17:14

It’s one of the best films I’ve seen for a while. I came out feeling like my emotions were all jumbled up and I didn’t know what had hit me. From laughing to crying in seconds. Taika Waititi is a genius.

funmummy48 · 06/01/2020 22:17

I didn’t dislike it but thought it was odd. It didn’t seem to know what it was meant to be and I thought the casting of Rebel Wilson was very strange. There were some heartbreaking moments in it. I’m pleased I saw it but it’s not a film I’d watch a second time.

Paisleydad · 09/01/2020 20:04

If you are THINKING of going to see this, stop the thinking and go. It's sad, tragic, brilliantly written, insightful and really, really funny.

There are a couple of swearies but they are comedic.

Nazis were vile. It's OK to use humour to ridicule.

Go. Please go. And if you hate it, I'll try to refund you. This film has to be bristling with BAFTAs and Oscars.

Paisleydad · 09/01/2020 20:05

Oh, yes. It's a bit weird.

Spidey66 · 15/01/2020 12:11

I thought it was brilliant, best film I've seen for years.

AllideasAndNoAction · 15/01/2020 12:13

I’m so looking forward to seeing this. Hunt for the Wilderpeople is a fantastic film so I have high hopes for JoJo Rabbit.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 20/01/2020 20:51

That scene...that butterfly!!

I loved it. Wasnt sure what to expect but I really enjoyed it. The little moments made it. Loved the ending...

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 20/01/2020 22:51

I think it portrayed both the absurdity and futility of war really well.
I loved it.
My husband though it was ok.
(He loved the gentlemen though and thought that was only ok)

Igneococcus · 21/01/2020 08:36

I saw it Friday night with 15 year old dd. We both loved it, dd cried quite a lot throughout and in the car on the way home.
I wonder why neither Jojo's nor Elsa's actors got any nominations, they are both fantastic.
