DVD for 12 year old 'but not kids film'

DD has asked for a DVD in her stocking - but specified not a kids' film. She's a big fan of Pixar and Ghibli but obviously thinks she's outgrown them (for now - I'm sure she'll rediscover her love for them later.) Recent hits have been The Princess Bride, Hidden Figures, Big Eyes and unexpectedly, Moonrise Kingdom (she'd loved Wes Anderson's animated films but I thought this might be too odd.) I've been looking at other Wes Anderson but his other stuff all seems to be 15 cert. She's definitely not interested in the romcom/ high school transformation movies all her friends like so is expecting recommendations from me.

So I'm looking for a 12 or PG, preferably a bit quirky, film - a bit of swearing is ok but nothing violent or sexual. I considered Little Miss Sunshine but a rewatch reminded me why it's a 15. So far I've only come up with Hunt for the Wilder People - any other ideas?

Stardust was a big hit with DD1.

NewNameGuy · 22/11/2019 13:50

Labyrinth?

Autumntoowet · 22/11/2019 13:50

If she likes Princess Bride what about Labyrinth or maybe The never ending story or The Dark Crystal.
Or perhaps start watching some classics like Breakfast at Tiffany’s or some of those wonderful musicals?
Or not her thing?

ForMySorrow · 22/11/2019 13:51

Labyrinth?
The Twilight films?

teabagleftin · 22/11/2019 13:53

Tremors

Riddleofthesands · 22/11/2019 13:56

My 12 yr old DD loves The Martian (Matt Damon) and The Divergent/Insurgent/Allegiant trilogy. Quite grown up films but all 12s, maybe checkout the trailers or read Commonsense Media reviews to get a feel for if you think she would like them.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople. There is some swearing but can't remember too much other bad stuff. I found IMDb has a parents guide! https://m.imdb.com/title/tt4698684/parentalguide?ref=mmttstryypg

If she liked Hidden Figures she might like Made in Dagenham or Suffragette.

lekkerkroketje · 22/11/2019 13:59

These are what I loved at 12. Some of these are 15s but generally relatively innocent, or at least the reason they were 15s was subtle enough I didn't understand until I was an adult! I love the Princess Bride and Studio Ghibli, so hopefully there might be some shared taste.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Amelie, Billy Elliot, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Strictly Ballroom, Belleville Rendez-vue, The Dish, Dave.

Maybe more recent movie like The Martian, Arrival, Star Wars or Fantastic Beasts might work? They're more adult movies, but without particularly 'adult' themes.

Penelope. Wonder Woman. Spiderman Into the Universe. The Lovely Bones. Mirror Mirror. Snow White and the Huntsman/ Snow White 2.

Bleach the anime

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 22/11/2019 14:03

Wow! Loads of great suggestions - thank you. Some we've already tried (Stardust is another big hit, Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal she didn't) and lots I'd never have thought of or haven't heard of - much appreciate all the ideas, and keep them coming.

Mine loved the recent remake of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, (the extremely old) Matter of Life and Death, Edward Scissorhands, and Stand by Me (and all the ones you have mentioned)

BarbaraStrozzi · 22/11/2019 14:07

Hidden figures was my first thought when I saw the thread title - then you mentioned it in the OP.

Some great suggestions upthread. If you're open to some 15s (my filter as a parent is no exploitative sex or violence unless historically contextualised, but I'm pretty relaxed about swearing) then Black Klansman is very good (though you would want to check the scene with the very graphic verbal description of a lynching to decide whether it was suitable).

How about some of the classics? To Kill a Mockingbird, perhaps.

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 22/11/2019 14:08

DS1 is 12 and loved Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice recently.

I watched Pretty Woman at 13 and adored it. I still do

Autumntoowet · 22/11/2019 14:12

Robin Hood? The Kevin Costner one?

moofolk · 22/11/2019 14:14

Captain Marvel

Breathlessness · 22/11/2019 14:14

You might feel it’s too much for her but The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Parents guide below (that contains spoilers)

The Royal Tenenbaums looks a better fit. It may be a 15 but it’s a mild 15.

The boy who would be king (modern King Arthur story)

newdeer · 22/11/2019 14:25

How about The Pursuit of Happyness - about a homeless single dad trying to make a better life for himself and his son.
Legally Blonde seems a bit rom com but it is so upbeat and adorable, and is really about a young woman discovering her own intellectual worth and potential.
The BlindSide is good too.
