DVD for 12 year old 'but not kids film'

DD has asked for a DVD in her stocking - but specified not a kids' film. She's a big fan of Pixar and Ghibli but obviously thinks she's outgrown them (for now - I'm sure she'll rediscover her love for them later.) Recent hits have been The Princess Bride, Hidden Figures, Big Eyes and unexpectedly, Moonrise Kingdom (she'd loved Wes Anderson's animated films but I thought this might be too odd.) I've been looking at other Wes Anderson but his other stuff all seems to be 15 cert. She's definitely not interested in the romcom/ high school transformation movies all her friends like so is expecting recommendations from me.

So I'm looking for a 12 or PG, preferably a bit quirky, film - a bit of swearing is ok but nothing violent or sexual. I considered Little Miss Sunshine but a rewatch reminded me why it's a 15. So far I've only come up with Hunt for the Wilder People - any other ideas?

Merryhouse jinx!

lekkerkroketje · 22/11/2019 18:29

I saw The Lobster suggested. No way! That's definitely definitely an adult movie.

Has she got the Lord of the Rings? 12 is the perfect age for that.

Miss Perregrin's home for Peculiar Children
The Goonies
Stand by me
Legally Blonde (most people dismiss this film as pink 'fluff' but it's actually about a girl learning to use her intelligence to become a top lawyer)
Ghost
The Color Purple (not sure if the rating but I loved this film when I was a young teen. I cried lots! But I loved it)
Enchanted
Mrs Doubtfire

Milicentbystander72 · 22/11/2019 18:38

My dd also loves Pitch Perfect (I think it's a 12)

Papergirl1968 · 22/11/2019 18:39

Ghost, Titanic, Pretty Woman, Dirty Dancing, Terminator, Mamma Mia, or High School Musical (probably old enough to be considered retro now, lol).

Papergirl1968 · 22/11/2019 18:41

The Bodyguard, True Lies, Speed...

Not sure I’d be happy about Dirty Dancing for a 12 year old. Abortion scene ?

Hunt out “What We Did on Our Holidays” - made for TV Billy Connolly film, gegtje and subtly funny, where the heroes are under 10 and over 80.

I was also going to say Back to the Future!

The original Italian Job

My 13yo recently enjoyed Inception
Also Emma, Pride & Prejudice, and Sense and Sensibility.

Catch me if you can - didn't think DD, same age, would be able to follow, bit she did and loved it.

It's a 12 rating and is a lot less explicit than Call the Midwife.

Marmite27 · 22/11/2019 22:11

Another vote for Captain Marvel.

MrsFoxPlus4Again · 22/11/2019 22:11

Save the last dance, sorry I just keep thinking of films I used to love 😂

Smiler88 · 23/11/2019 00:44

Its a wonderful life is a fab family film, and a christmas classic!

Needmoresleep · 23/11/2019 00:47

It's old, but we wanted a DVD for a sleep over party which none of the kids had seen before. Cool Runnings, about the Jamaican bobsleigh team was perfect.

Riddleofthesands · 23/11/2019 15:18

Cool runnings is a great shout. “Whatever is wrong with you it is no little ting” is a regular phrase in our house.

FreyaMountstuart · 23/11/2019 15:40

Another vote for Napoleon Dynamite!

Also The Seven Samurai (my boys loved this!)

FthisS · 23/11/2019 15:48

Drop dead Fred
Clueless
Breakfast club
Grease
Across the universe
Ready player one

I have more experience with ds’s, but some of the more recent marvel movies have some really strong female characters. I’m not usually a big DC fan, but Wonder Woman was really well done. Also the original Harry Potters or the fantastic beasts spin offs. I also recently watched the hunger games trilogy with ds(13), that and maze runner, which are quite good if you’re into the whole dystopian future thing.

FiveFarthings · 23/11/2019 16:02

How about Howl’s Moving Castle or Spirited Away? I was 14 when they came out and enjoyed them then so might be okay for a 12 year old.

waltzingparrot · 28/11/2019 18:56

Green Book ( lovely heart warming ending)

A bunch of amateurs - think there might be a naked body or 2 in this, but they are actors on a stage - nothing going on between them. Funny and moving.
