Hello, I haven’t watched the tv show but would like to see the film this weekend. Would it make sense, or do I need to watch the tv show to understand the characters.

I think you would be fine. There may be bits that go over your head as you don't know the history but you won't notice. It's a very gentle drama - enjoy!
