Anyone seen this yet?
I watched it last night and am desperate to talk about it.

I watched it last night.

My face was like this Shock Grin Confused

FFSMelvin · 05/07/2019 17:30

And at least 4 people walked out. Someone (very loudly) said "what the actual fuck was that all about?" when it finished.

GimmieTheCoffeeAndNooneDies · 05/07/2019 19:35

Yes, left saying what the Fuck have I just seen.
I preferred it to hereditary, but enjoy would be the wrong word. Reminded me of Wicker man, the original not the farcical remake

I thought the lead actress was amazing.

Flurgle · 06/07/2019 13:28

How scary is it? I want to see it but I’m a wimp.

GimmieTheCoffeeAndNooneDies · 06/07/2019 13:49

Not scary as such. The major theme is about a failing relationship,. Some black comedy, and some blood and violence, but not a huge amount. Rather unsettling and surreal, quite slow in middle section, .the final scenes are jaw dropping.

billydilly · 06/07/2019 20:18

Loved it. Quite mental and beautiful, funny too.

JeremyIronsBenFolds · 07/07/2019 00:14

Really wanted to love this, but though it was very atmospheric, it was way too slow. Could have lost 45 mins and been a much zippier more effective film. But Florence Pugh was great, and I expect it would repay a second watch to pick up a lot of the hidden clues. I thought when it first started to reveal itself (ie the scene with the older couple) it was going to be amazing, but took too long to get to the inevitable.

dancingcamper · 07/07/2019 00:18

Not a patch on The Wicker Man.

myrtleWilson · 07/07/2019 21:36

Saw it today... are we doing spoilers on this thread or not.. (before I blunder in!)

hammeringinmyhead · 09/07/2019 21:11

Hated it. The most disturbing bit happened about an hour in and then it meandered along for about 45 minutes too long instead of successfully building the dread.

dancingcamper · 09/07/2019 21:39

Agree, about an hour too long, showed its hand far too soon and no tension.

My boyfriend kept apologising for suggesting it.

GimmieTheCoffeeAndNooneDies · 09/07/2019 21:47

I thought the scene with the older couple was the pivotal one so midpoint was the right place to have it. Before that scene the community/cult were just a bunch of mildly eccentric hippies with a taste for magic mushrooms.

hammeringinmyhead · 10/07/2019 07:40

Yes, but I thought it would build up to reveal some really shocking stuff but everything after that felt really tame and predictable. I could have walked out after the Simon/Connie bit and still told you scene for scene how it would go.

marthajone · 10/07/2019 20:01

Is it worth seeing this? Does it have any similarities to any other movies? Looks strange!

PaperFlowers4 · 11/07/2019 19:59

Saw this the afternoon. It was far too long, but I found the ending genuinely disturbing. Can’t say that about many horror movies, so its done its job.

I thought there was some really clever elements in this. Like how the anthropologist students were accepting of the increasingly sinister events because it’s culture and they are serious students of culture so they were determined to remain dispassionate and non-judgmental.

Spoilery bit:

And how we see the point where Dani gets won over to the group - when she she is crying on the floor surrounded by the women crying back at her. That what she always wanted - for her pain to be recognised by someone else.

zukiecat · 14/07/2019 10:07

As a pagan I really fancy this film, but does it have a lot of blood and gore?

I don't mind scary or strange but I don't do blood too well.

The original Wickerman is one of my favourite films and I also enjoyed The Wicker Tree, Robin Hardy was going to make a third film but he sadly died before anything was put into practice.

chezbot · 14/07/2019 13:34

Also v fond of OG Wicker man @zukiecat and I loved this. Must warn of a few hand over mouth horrible bits though.
The script is kicking about online if you fancy preparing yourself? After the Jordan Peele/Ari Aster Fangoria interview I felt I needed to.

Thanks @chezbot

I'll have a look for the script, I do fancy it, but really don't like blood and guts

Scary or unnerving I'm fine with though

I didn't find films like The Exorcist or Paranormal Activity at all scary, I watch things like Final Destination (except the first one) from behind cushions!
