Best ever plot twist?

Verily1 · 29/06/2019 20:22

We are arguing over the best film plot twist ever.

I say ‘I am your father’ (Darth Vader). DS says Bruce Willis’s revelation at the end of the sixth sense.

MN jury?

Primal fear had me not trusting anyone for weeks!!! Biggest impact of a twist ever.

Abibranning · 29/06/2019 22:29

Orphan omg

GuiltyPleasure · 29/06/2019 22:31

Sixth Sense was completely obvious from about 10 mins in, although some of the scenes were very good, like the restaurant scene with his wife. Star Wars also not at all a surprise that Darth Vader was his dad. The late prequels were much more interesting though to see how innocent fun-loving boy Annakin went to the dark side,
I'm a complete cynic though & I've rarely watched a film or read a book where I haven't worked out the "twist". I think Usual Suspects is probably the best one in terms of a reveal, even though I'd worked it out

Yabbers · 29/06/2019 22:32

Ahh, missed that this was a vote between two.

I don't really know either of those movies well enough, but if it helps
I gave OH my proxy vote and he says 6th Sense.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 29/06/2019 22:50

Neither of those two as the best ever. Sorry. The Usual Suspects is a contender for best ever. As is Vertigo. M Night Shyamalan is the King of the twist with Unbreakable, Sixth Sense, Split, Glass and The Village. But Jordan Peele is coming up behind quickly with Get Out and Us.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 29/06/2019 22:52

Now, The Game, that is a goooood film.

Graphista · 29/06/2019 23:02

Ones I saw coming

Sixth sense
Primal fear
Final analysis
The empire strikes back - it WASN'T revealed until then. Much as I love Star Wars franchise I did see this coming due to the Vader/Vater thing as I knew the German for father and darth is also close to dark seemed like big clues to me. Plus I'd been raised on westerns which Star Wars is basically a western saga set in space and there's lots of dysfunctional family stuff in westerns, plus tales of redemption etc

Usual suspects I used to love but can't bring myself to watch now due to the revelations about spacey.

My favourites that I didn't see coming were

The game
Identity
No way out
Now you see me (though I should have as I love Mark ruffalo and should've known his part would have more to it)
LA Confidentlal (thankfully spacey not in it much)
Valentine - a little known teen slasher flick with a twist
Planet of the apes (1968) on first viewing I was genuinely 😱but I was quite young
Scream - often forgotten in such discussions there was actually a double twist -

1 - that there were 2 murderers
2 - one of them is arrested really early on but it's presented as unlikely in part due to the fact he's arrested by the "dopey" police officer. This is weirdly not really addressed within the franchise.

The loft - again a little known film with an excellent twist. Won't spoil but do recommend.

Intruders (2015) - about an agoraphobic subjected to a home invasion. Again. I won't spoil the twist but definitely recommend with a caveat that it's a tough watch and may be triggering for some.

Ones I've yet to see

Shutter island I haven't watched yet I really must.
Hard candy seems good

Doyoumind · 29/06/2019 23:13

Just remembered Fight Club, of course.

Planet of the Apes, yes. I remember being fairly young when I saw that (original) and being completely surprised.

The Game is just weird but a surprise.

Verily1 · 29/06/2019 23:23

Planet of the apes- the despair!

The others, yes forgot about that- only big twist I’ve seen in the cinema I think. Feels more powerful in public I think.

It’s a terrible film but I liked the twist in scary movie- much better than the one in scream.

I'm really bad at seeing twists coming so definitely The Others and the Sixth Sense.

Also The Orphanage though that was more sad then anything

PivotPivotPivottt · 01/07/2019 22:12

Orphan would have been a brilliant plot twist but I'd already been told about the movie before watching it.

Morticiaismystyleicon · 01/07/2019 22:25

Frozen. I did NOT clock that Hans was a bad guy. Not even a bit. I gasped and shouted 'NOOooo!' Loud enough to wake the baby.

thebelt344 · 02/07/2019 05:06

A Beautiful Mind has a great reveal. Obviously don't read if you don't want to know, it's a great movie to watch anyway! The plot revolves around some quirky characters and Russell Crowe performing intense and dangerous codebreaking for a secret government project. Reveal below:

Turns out pretty much the whole movie (characters, gov't) is a lie caused by schitzophrenia. it blows your mind. He recovers at the end though, it's a fantastic film.

flumpybear · 02/07/2019 05:42

@thebelt344 - I thought he didn't recover but just kept them in control?! It was a while ago I saw it last thought

thebelt344 · 02/07/2019 06:42

@flumpybear

Yeah you're right he doesn't actually fully get rid of the symptoms. They just get less severe and he learns how to keep them down. I just meant the movie doesn't end with us discovering the reveal.. we get to see how he deals with it. Kinda cool

SleepingIsOverrated · 02/07/2019 07:10

Another vote for Shutter Island!!

PigeonofDoom · 02/07/2019 07:15

Don’t look now

CarpetMeCarpetYou · 02/07/2019 07:17

Memento?

So sad I never got to see Sixth Sense without knowing, I’m terrible at seeing these things coming and wouldn’t have known!

DinosaursWouldEatYou · 02/07/2019 17:52

Shutter Island! And perhaps Inception, but that film requires a lot of thinking and paying attention

Graphista · 02/07/2019 20:01

Just watched a film last night that had a twist I didn't but should have seen coming.

Again little known I think (I'd not heard of it, it popped up as a result of watching another film on Amazon prime as "other people who watched X also watched these")

The accountant starring Ben affleck and Anna kendrick

ememem84 · 02/07/2019 20:09

Yes - Remember Me. Great film

It took me three watches to understand the sixth sense.

Shutter island I loved.

rslsys · 02/07/2019 22:05

I'm ancient - but The Sting did it for me.

Katastrophy · 02/07/2019 22:08

V old film, but Jagged Edge with Glenn Close.

darkriver19886 · 02/07/2019 22:16

I am really bad at spoiling films for myself. I google films as I am about to watch them making sure I don't get triggered.

However, the sixth sense got me.

I haven't seen the other films as of yet. Split didn't have a twist really.

MsJuniper · 02/07/2019 22:22

I worked out Sixth Sense but still thought it was a great twist.

Tully was a good one. Had that prickle of realisation before the reveal.
