Dumbo, what age?

DD is 4 and a half, 5 in June.
DP wants to bring her to see Dumbo.
I don't think it's a good idea as :
She can be quite sensitive and recently cried for over quarter of an hour after seeing a sad bit in my little pony.
She can get anxious about things, last week she was worried about me dying and her not having a mummy anymore.
She has a long memory, will bring up things that have happened months ago.
I think that the movie might be too graphic/ scary/ sad for her. That it being a film will make things look more "real" if that makes sense and am worried about the Dumbo/Mum separation. Also as Tim Burton is directing it might be quite dark/scary.

DD has said she wants to see it but has only seen the trailer with him flying.

DP thinks I'm being overcautious and that "we can't wrap her in cotton wool/ prevent every upset she might have".

I have had depression and anxiety and to me the film contents would be triggering so am not sure if I am being unreasonable or not.

We have agreed to wait until DBIL has seen it, he's going friday to review it for local radio station.

What age do you think is ok to bring?

It's a good idea that you're waiting for someone you know to see it first, and that's the best bet. I wouldn't like to say an age until I've seen it myself, and ultimately every child is different.

I’m taking my 5 and 3 year olds as they both adore the Disney version. DH wondered if it might be a bit upsetting for them but I think they’ll be fine, they’re pretty good at differentiating fact from fiction.

It's probably going to be much more different from the original cartoon version especially with Tim Burton directing. So it's hard to judge based on the original.

My boys were about 2 and 4 when they saw the newer version of the jungle book and enjoyed that. But compared to most on here I let my kids watch things that would scar other people's kids for life.

I'd take my 6YO and almost 4 YO to see it. But they don't want to! Tempted to drag them along for mother's day. Grin

We went today and my 6 year old was frightened quite a lot. I wouldn't take children any younger. Lots of the scenes are quite dark and then at the end there is a dramatic scene. There is quite a bit of cruelty in it to Dumbo's mother. And sadness. I can't say I enjoyed it very much apart from the last 3 minutes of the film!

I’ve just taken my 4.5 yr old and she loved it. I thought it was really well done, particularly liked the way they did the pink elephants!

Hi OP, did you take her?
My DD is same age and her granny wants to take her this weekend.
