Saddest film you've ever seen?

So I'm sitting here watching Seven Pounds (Will Smith)
I've seen this film loads of times, but it never fails to make me cry. Like proper ugly cry, tears streaming, everything.
This is the only film that does this to me. I think it's so underrated.

What movies do this to other people??

Life Is Beautiful... the part where the father knows he's about to be killed but still does what he can to make sure his son thinks it's a joke, and isn't afraid.

The Pianist.

Empire of the Sun.

JohnWolfenstein · 13/01/2019 15:48

Definitely Graveyard of the Fireflies. I watched it shortly after having dd1. I was probably hormonal, but it was so sad I couldn't stop crying. It haunted me for weeks.

marycontraryquite · 13/01/2019 15:49

Spudlet I was just about to mention Life is Beautiful. I saw it in the cinema on my own when it first came out and nobody even moved until the credits had rolled and the lights came on. I was just about able to hold it together at that point and able to leave. Just stunning, beautiful and heartbreaking.

Bitchinabonnet · 13/01/2019 15:51

Million Dollar Baby
Life Is Beautiful
On Her Majesty's Secret Service - the only film in which James Bond marries , 'We Have All The Time In The World' by Louis Armstrong plays and I sob . Every time .

flapjackfairy · 13/01/2019 15:52

I have said before that Emma Thompson has a lot to answer for !
Saving Mr banks, Sense and sensibility ( when Marianne is ill and Elinor is begging her not to die ) and then Nanny Mcphee 2 when the dad comes back from the war after he was believed to be dead.
I cry every single time I watch any of them !
Emma Thompson needs a flaming health warning .

Elderflower14 · 13/01/2019 15:52

Haatchi definitely... The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas too. I saw it in our village hall with my best friends daughter. I had to explain the significance of the smoke coming out of the chimney and that if my ds2 who has special needs had been alive then he would have been killed.
The Bucket List.... I watched that in our village hall too. The ending is very reminiscent of when my my dh died. I was sobbing uncontrollably. Everyone else was very sweet about it...

Iputthescrewinthetuna · 13/01/2019 15:55

I watched 7lbs recently. I was fine until right at the end when she looked into Esra's eyes.

Film that had me in pieces...stepmom!

Pre children it was fear of my mum passing.
Post children, the fear of leaving my beauties behind.
Stepmom breaks my heart every single time. X

GlubGlubGlub · 13/01/2019 15:56

The Descendants with George Cloony.

Nitw1t · 13/01/2019 15:57

A Monster Calls.

I cried so much I had wrinkled fingers.

bellinisurge · 13/01/2019 15:58

Senna.
I normally steer clear of films I know to be sad but wanted to see this one. I cried.

WhereYouLeftIt · 13/01/2019 16:00

Oh god, I've just blubbed watching the trailer to "A Dog's Purpose"!

pineapplebryanbrown · 13/01/2019 16:00

My sister and I used to go and howl at sad movies when we were kids. Here are some snot fests from many years ago:

All Mine to Give - a mother who is ill and has to give away her 10 children
Last Feelings - a teenager with a brain tumour who wants to win a swimming competition
Kramer v Kramer - a custody battle

AppleBlossomArseCheeks · 13/01/2019 16:02

My girl

chemenger · 13/01/2019 16:03

The Mission, so many people sobbing in the cinema at the end.
I do not watch any animal films, ever. Someone started watching War Horse sitting next to me on a plane and I was contemplating an eye mask to avoid seeing it. Never seen Bambi or Dumbo and never will.
Saving Private Ryan.
Beaches.
I don’t think it’s a film but The play Royal Hunt of the Sun.

Elderflower14 · 13/01/2019 16:05

Just remembered another. Who Will Love My Children? Proper sobbed at the end....

chipshopElvis · 13/01/2019 16:06

Grave of the Fireflies. It's horrific.

Spudlet · 13/01/2019 16:06

Pre children it was fear of my mum passing.
Post children, the fear of leaving my beauties behind.

Can do relate to that - since having DS, it's the thought of leaving him behind that really gets to me. I can't bear it. And when the films are rooted in reality, well, I'm just doomed.

Another one I thought of - 12 Years a Slave. Several days after watching it, I randomly thought about Patsy (Lupita Nyongo's character) and burst into tears... the thought of that poor woman and so many like her who had no chance of escape. Now I think it would be the poor woman separated from her children that would really get to me (I mean she did as well but it was Patsy that devastated me), but this was pre-children.

Timmytoo · 13/01/2019 16:08

Jock of the Bushveld, God Bless the Child, The Incredible Journey and Watership Down. 😭😭😭.

firsttimedad79 · 13/01/2019 16:13

I am Sam.

Brilliant true story.

BeanSprout79 · 13/01/2019 16:15

For me it would be easier to say what films I 'don't' cry at Grin

MrPoppysGF · 13/01/2019 16:19

flapjackfairy yes, agree and that moment when Emma Thompson realises her husband has bought his secretary a necklace and "both sides now" by Joni Mitchell is playing. So sad.

Schindler's List
AI
My young teenage DS saw Kite Runner - which I have never seen - he was incredibly moved by the story and he retold it to me with such pathos that it really touched me too but I don't think I could watch it now.

imjustanerd · 13/01/2019 16:20

I've cried at so many films (I'm a big wimp), but the ones that gets me the most are

The Color Purple
Beaches
Fried Green Tomatoes
My girl
It's a wonderful life
Forrest Gump
Steel Magnolias

Jengacritical · 13/01/2019 16:22

Brokeback mountain. I saw it as a student and remember the whole cinema walking out in stunned silence. Beautiful sad film.

dontticklethetoad · 13/01/2019 16:22

Coco Blush

TheRollingCrone · 13/01/2019 16:23

I watched Manchester by the sea last night - and I'm still thinking about it now. Watch it and break
