Saddest film you've ever seen?

So I'm sitting here watching Seven Pounds (Will Smith)
I've seen this film loads of times, but it never fails to make me cry. Like proper ugly cry, tears streaming, everything.
This is the only film that does this to me. I think it's so underrated.

What movies do this to other people??

OP posts:

The Constant Gardener.

I don’t know why, it was just such a tragic story, but with a satisfying ending.

UAEMum · 09/07/2019 21:15

I have 3 to offer.
Beaches - a popular choice
Who will love my children
My sister's keeper

Goldenhorn · 09/07/2019 21:17

Hachi
One day
The notebook

And the film that made me have an actual breakdown... me before you

Goldenhorn · 09/07/2019 21:18

Oh and About Time. But its one of my favourite films ever

OpenYourEyes · 09/07/2019 21:20

Armaggedon every single time, proper sobbing and The Green Mile.

I cry a lot at films, Endgame made me cry in the cinema recently all the way through.

macaroniandpizza · 09/07/2019 21:22

Marley and me is the saddest film ive ever seen. Last watched it 7yrs ago before i got my oldest ddog and not watched it again nor will i i cant cope with the ending 😭

RottnestFerry · 09/07/2019 21:22

As a child: Ring of Bright Water.

As an adult: Highlander.

Crinescene · 11/07/2019 11:47

Someone mentioned Precious which shows how the eponymous main character is treated badly by everyone and heart goes out to her. Another film within a maligned eponymous character is Albert Nobbs with Glenn Close. Both characters had such hard lives but made the best of them

WhatGetsMeDownMakesMeStronger · 11/07/2019 12:40

Gorillas in the mist very very sad

Oblomov19 · 13/07/2019 13:17

A star is born
Beaches

thatone · 13/07/2019 23:48

I just saw 'Maudie' on Netflix - very sad but quite uplifting at the same time. Amazing performances from Sally Hawkins and Ethan Hawke.

jogro · 14/07/2019 00:07

So many of the films everyone has mentioned resonate.
I would add 'The way we were'.
Robert Redford and Barbra Streisand. Beautiful film and heartbreaking. Makes me bawl.

zukiecat · 14/07/2019 08:15

So many films make me cry, but here are a few

Black Beauty
A Little Princess
The Secret Garden
Steel Magnolias
The Green Mile
Forrest Gump
My Sister's Keeper
The Pianist
The Book Thief

The Round Up - A french film about the Vichy police rounding up Jews for deportation to Auschwitz

The Devil's Arithmetic- Kirsten Dunst plays a Jewish New York teenager who is transported back to 1941 Poland and is sent to a death camp, even sadder now because Brittany Murphy is the other lead.

There are so many more!

zukiecat · 14/07/2019 08:18

@RottnestFerry

I saw Ring of Bright Water as a child

So traumatised, I sobbed all the way home and for days after, I've never been able to watch it again, traumatised for life

Poor Midge 😓

Crustaceans · 14/07/2019 08:26

I agree with those who said grave of the fireflies. It’s just devastating. I watched it over a decade ago and I still remember how much it affected me so strongly.

afrikat · 14/07/2019 08:41

The Green Mile and The Champ made me cry more than anything else

JamieFraserskiltspeaksout · 28/07/2019 19:44

The prince of tides
Legends of the fall

FishCanFly · 30/07/2019 13:12

Honkytonk Man. One of the most underrated films of Clint Eastwood.

TheVanguardSix · 30/07/2019 13:16

So many... but two which left me speechless were:

Land of Mine (about kids really. German POWs about 15-17 years old clearing landmines. Beautifully done.)

Poetry- a Korean film. The ending is one of the most powerful endings I’ve ever watched. Astounding. It’s 100% on Rotten Tomatoes for a reason.

Land of Mine is 91%

Great movies. Deep. No fluff. Nothing Hollywood about them.

MaisyMary77 · 30/07/2019 13:19

Grave of the Fireflies. Probably the only film that has ever made me sob out-loud.

DeniseRoyal · 06/08/2019 18:48

The Bridges of Madison County, Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood at their finest. Sob my heart out every time though!

Paddyodoors · 06/08/2019 18:49

The Polar Express

MariaVonBratt · 06/08/2019 18:50

Edward scissor hands

PoppingOneOutIn2020 · 06/08/2019 18:57

The green mile.

Bubbletrouble43 · 12/08/2019 20:22

Finding Neverland. It's kate Winslet and her sons not johnny depp that make me cry.
